Newsletter 7 – 16th October 2020

Dear Parents

Last day of this half term: Please remember that term ends on Wednesday 21st October and we expect to return to school as usual on Monday 2nd November. We will update you if this should change.  

Thanks to our PFA We offer our very sincere thanks to our amazing PFA, with a special mention of Adrienne Conlon and her team, whose term has just finished. They have done tremendous work to raise funds for our children – the PFA paid for the new Boat in the little playground last year, amongst many other things. We particularly value the PFA role in welcoming new families into our community, and providing the special treats for our children that make school so special – the Christmas party, Pancake races and so on. We are very grateful to Mrs Knox and Mrs Read who have so kindly offered to be the new Chair and Secretary in the coming year, and to Mr Cleveley who has agreed to stay on as treasurer. Without our PFA and the huge support of our families, our children would miss out on much of the enrichment that makes education here so special.

Staying warm this winter As we go forward into the colder weather, we remind parents that children are encouraged to have a warm fleece to keep in school all the time. We are also working towards a system in each class where children have a pair of dry shoes and socks/wellies available. We cannot ask children to keep to the field path as we used to in the very wet weather, because of the change of use of the field for Covid restrictions, so they will be on the wet ground more than they would usually have been. And the school will not be very warm when they get back inside. Your child’s class teacher will let you know what their plan is – the older children will probably be allowed to have a spare pair of shoes in school, and will change into them if necessary. They will then have to take the wet shoes home to dry them. The younger children have wellies in school.

We are trying to limit the traffic of items between home and school, as this is another way to limit the risk of viral transmission, but there are some situations where we have to be pragmatic and accept that there will be some things we cannot avoid moving between home and school.

Forest of Dean Residential Trip We are delighted to be booking this trip for children in Years 5 and 6 with a non-refundable deposit of £50 this year, and travel insurance to cover in case of cancellation. The total cost, including coach fare and all activities is £225. Please find a letter attached to this mail giving more information about the trip and the centre. We have been taking children to this venue for many years and it is a very successful residential trip – children have an amazing time and learn lots about team work, independence, courage, physical fitness and having fun.  Children who qualify for the Pupil Premium funding will have their trip fees paid for them. We will set up a payment scheme if you wish to pay it off over several months. We need to know how many will be coming by Monday 2nd November at the latest so that we can confirm the booking. Please send in the attached form and deposit by this date.

Wrap Around Care Do complete the forms if you wish to take advantage of our Wrap Around care offer to start on 2nd November. Lots of detail in last week’s newsletter:

We would be grateful if you can have the forms back to us by the end of today, so that we can organise the sessions in line with the Covid requirements. There is still a lot of spare capacity and we would like to have more children to make it viable.  Please note a slight adjustment – rather than using School Money to pay, we shall be asking parents to pay by BACS payment.

NSPCC I am pleased to tell you that children have been or shortly will be participating in the NSPCC’s Speak out. Stay safe. online programme.  This consists of an online assembly and supporting classroom based activities.  Speak out. Stay safe.  is a safeguarding programme available to all primary schools.  It aims to help children understand abuse in all its forms and to recognise the signs of abuse in a child friendly, interactive way. Children are taught to speak out if they are worried, either to a trusted adult or Childline. If you would like to know more about the Speak out. Parking Please do NOT park in the layby and wait for your child’s Bubble to open – it is for Stop and Drop only. If you need to wait with your child, please park across the road in the parking area so that other parents can Stop and Drop. We are very grateful to all our parents for their patience with the new systems – we are all working together to keep our community safe at this difficult time.

Policies Each year at this time I like to summarise in the newsletter some of our most relevant policies and procedures, so that parents are familiar with them.This week, we will discuss briefly the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Policy. For children who have a significant learning difficulty or disability, we will provide education that is additional to, or otherwise different from, the educational provision made generally for children of this age. We work closely with parents and with outside agencies such as Educational Psychologists, Behavioural Support Therapists and Speech and Language Therapists to ensure best outcomes for children with SEND. There are clear indicator documents to guide the school in the decision about whether a child ought to be receiving this extra provision. Our policy and information on SEND can be accessed on our website. In short, what will happen is that any child about whom the teacher has significant concerns because they are failing to make progress will be raised at an SEND meeting with the SENDCO (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator). They will be assessed and given whatever extra support is deemed necessary. If the child still does not make progress even with the extra support, they will be assessed further and might be registered with the Local Authority as having Special Educational Needs or Disabilities. Parents and the child will have input into this process. In the event that the child continues to make very little progress, they may be assessed for an Education, Health and Care Plan which, if successful, might draw down some extra funding. Parents can help to decide what this extra funding ought to be used for. 

Overall in our school, our children with SEND make very good progress even if their attainment is low. Mrs Goddard is our SENDCO. It is worth remarking that children who are struggling but do not meet the thresholds for SEND provision are also given lots of extra support in this school to ensure their best outcomes. Many children have a short programme of extra support at some point in their school lives. Many children also have disabilities but if these disabilities do not prevent the child from making steady progress, then these children will not be registered on the SEND Code of Practice since it is clear from their outcomes that the adjustments we make for them in the usual course of their education are sufficient to enable them to make progress. Our quality-first teaching helps to ensure that very few children need to be included on the formal SEND Code of Practice.

Secondary School Applications   The secondary school application process is now underway for September 2021 entry. Parents can apply using the online system, which is available through or by obtaining a paper application through the customer contact centre (call 01225 713010 and a copy will be sent out).

The deadline for applications is midnight on the 31st October 2020.

Edington Under 5s From 3rd November, the Edington Under 5s will be running twice a week on Tuesday & Thursday mornings, please see the Facebook group or contact Louisa on 07538278445 for more details. (This is because we can only have a limited number of people per session).

PFA News

Letters and order forms so that children can design their own Christmas Cards should now be with you. This is usually a very popular fund-raiser and we are hoping to gain enough commission from this project to fund a small Christmas gift for each child at school, as we have in previous years. 

This year, after your child has completed the design, you will need to follow the instructions on the form to place an on-line order and pay electronically. It is then important that you return the design to the PFA on Monday 2nd November to the box outside school.
