Newsletter 4 – 28th September 2018

Dear Parents

Reading Workshop We encourage all families to send a representative to our reading workshop on Tuesday 2nd October, starting at 2.20pm. At this event we shall help you to find ways of supporting your child’s comprehension of their reading by asking them penetrating questions about what they have read. They will use the skills of inference and deduction to arrive at an answer. After a short workshop in the hall, we will give you the opportunity to take part in shared reading with your child.

Harvest service Thank you to all who attended this with us. We had a lovely service of celebration of our harvest, with some beautiful singing and children participating in readings and prayers.

Donations for Harvest Thank you all for your very generous donations to our Harvest collection for the Devizes food bank. Over 1,500 emergency food boxes were given to people in the Devizes area last year.

Visit to Hindu Temple All our children and all our staff will be going to the Hindu temple in Swindon on Wednesday 10th October. This is one of the ways in which we help our children learn to respect other faith and non-faith traditions, and to enjoy and appreciate the wonderful diversity and multiculturalism of our country. Please make sure your child has a packed lunch or has ordered their packed lunch from Lataca on this day as there will be no hot dinners. We had hoped to include a visit to Avebury on the way back, but sadly their facilities are very much reduced at present and they cannot accommodate us. We should be back at school well before the end of the school day.

Briefing on Safeguarding Thanks to all those volunteers who came to the briefing on safeguarding, health and safety and data protection on Wednesday. If you have not yet had a briefing this year, please let the office know so that we can make arrangements for your update.

Fire Drill The health and safety of our children is an absolute priority. We hold regular evacuation drills to ensure that all our children and staff can leave the building calmly and safely in an emergency. On Tuesday we had our first fire drill of the year. Everyone had left the building within 65 seconds and the entire exercise, including roll call, was completed in under 2 minutes.

Holiday Club Our holiday club providers, SuperStars, have offered to run holiday club activities at our school through part of the October half term break. The club will run from Monday 29th October to Friday 2nd November.  Forms are available at the office or you can book online through their website, . Children love this club and we always have very positive reports about their activities.

School Dinners A plea that you will check with your children before ordering their hot dinners through Lataca – too often children refuse to eat their dinner because it is something they don’t enjoy and would never have ordered if given the choice. Occasionally we are able to offer them something else, if there is sufficient extra food available, but this is not always possible. If your child has chosen their own meal, they might be more likely to eat it! (If you would prefer that we never offer your child an alternative meal, please let the office know.)

Sick children Children are usually well enough to come to school even if they have a bit of a sniffly cold or a little cough. Please do not send them in if they are running a temperature or if they have had vomiting or diarrhoea, and keep them home for at least 24 to 48 hours after the last episode of upset tummy.  We encourage children to observe good hygiene in school, and we ensure that all desks and toilet facilities are disinfected daily. It is important to keep infectious illnesses, especially tummy upsets, under control in schools.

Absence If your child is away from school for any reason, please telephone the office first thing in the morning to inform them and follow up with a letter or an email explaining the absence so that it can be noted on the register.

Fruit in KS2 We give a fruit snack to the children in KS1 at morning playtime. If your KS2 child would like to have fruit at morning playtime, please feel free to send something in, and they can eat it whilst standing with the adult on duty before they run off to play. Only fresh fruit please – no other snacks.

PFA News

Thank you so much for generously donating to the Harvest assembly today. The food will be collected by the Trussell Trust on Monday.

We very much hope to see you at the PFA MEETING on Wednesday 3rd October at 7pm at The Bell in Great Cheverell. This will be our first meeting of the school year and also our AGM! We would love to see as many parents and carers there as possible – everyone is very welcome! If you are new to the school we would love to meet you! All we do is for the benefit of the children and any involvement, big or small, is very much welcomed.

TEXTILE RECYCLING There will be a fabric recycling collection on the morning of Monday 1st October, please bring any clothing, shoes, bedding (not duvets or pillows) & curtains and leave outside the Arts Centre (by the fence under the covered area, outside the school reception)

Many thanks,

Your PFA Team
