Newsletter 34 – 6th July 2018

French Café experience What fun we had at the French cafés! The children did very well to conduct short conversations in French, to determine what their parents would like to order to eat or drink. The maths problems were also engaging and it was lovely to see parents helping their children work through the puzzles. Thank you to all who attended. And a very special thanks to Mrs Twentyman who organised these events, and to the teachers and TAs who put so much effort into making the afternoons a success. We are also very grateful to Darcy Johnson and to the Year 8s of Lavington school who supported us so beautifully.

Year 6 Leavers Cathedral Service Our Year 6 children had a wonderful time at the Cathedral on Wednesday, taking part in various workshops which included themes on moving from primary school to secondary school, and also taking part in a short but moving service on the same theme. Thanks to Mr Amor and those who accompanied the trip as well as the admin staff who, as ever, organised coaches, funding, risk assessments and other paperwork necessary

Sports Day  On Wednesday 11th July, next week, we have our Sports Day. The event starts at about 9.15 and is usually finished by 12.00pm. Parents and carers are then welcome to stay on the field and bring a picnic lunch to share with their children, if they wish. At the end of lunch time, the bell will ring at 1.00pm and the children will line up and continue with afternoon school as usual.

If the weather continues to be so hot, children will be sitting under the trees for Sports Day and we advise parents to bring parasols and umbrellas since it does get very hot on the field. Please do not encourage your child to come to you during the Sports Day events – every child must stay with their team for the whole morning until the lunch time picnic. We run a very tight timetable and we must have every child exactly where we need them all the time. You can share all your comments and hugs during the lunch time picnic. We also ask parents to stay on their side of the track – it becomes very complex for us to manage if there are non-staff adults mingling in amongst the children whilst we are trying to run the sports day events.

If you have a T shirt or a ribbon or some other mark of the colour team that your child is in, please encourage them to wear this – we can then identify their team more easily.

Sports Day Lunch All children who have ordered a lunch on that day will have a packed lunch rather than the usual roast, so that they can eat outside with everyone else in a picnic. If you want to cancel your order for that day, please let Lataca know.

Avebury Class Exhibition Parents of children in Avebury class are all invited to come and view some of their children’s work and have some refreshments on Tuesday 10th July at 2.15pm – the children’s models of the World War 2 gardens as well as some art work will be on display.

School Eucharist A quiet moment of reflection in this busy term – the school Eucharist will take place on Wednesday 18th July at 2.00pm. There will be singing, dancing, readings and reflections. Everyone is invited to attend. This is always a lovely event.

Year 6 Leavers’ trip Year 6 children will go on their final outing as a class to a mystery destination on Friday 20th July. Please make sure that you have read the notices going home about this and send children to school with a packed lunch and the other items mentioned.

Award Ceremony and Leavers’ Assembly On Monday 23rd July, we will have an assembly presented by the Year 6 leavers, as they review and remember their days at primary school – lots of laughter and tears at this event! At the end, we will have our awards ceremony. We have 10 awards, presented for academic achievements, sporting achievements, artistic achievements, music, fellowship, services to the school and so on. Parents of Year 6 children will be given priority for seating but all are welcome to attend.

Silbury class restaurant A reminder that in the afternoon of Tuesday 17th July, Silbury class will be holding their restaurant in the hall for their parents. You will have received your invitation.

Last day of term Tuesday 24th July is the last day of term. Everyone from Year 1 – Year 6 is back to school on Tuesday 4th September. Foundation Stage children start with their half days on Thursday 6th September.

Class Photos The photos have been sent off for developing – we regret that we cannot take any late orders.

Salisbury Museum Trip We will be jumping into the new school year with a school trip for children in Year 1 and Year 2 to Salisbury museum on Wednesday 5th September! They will find out about Art through the Ages. This will be their introduction into the whole-school art theme on famous English artist, David Hockney, which will be our vehicle for learning through the first half term. All other children will have a trip to the museum to find out about the history of art on Wednesday 12th September and Thursday 13th September.

Parents welcome meetings These meetings will introduce you to your child’s teacher for the coming academic year, give you the chance to find out what the expectations are in that classroom and to ask any questions you may have.  Children in Stonehenge class will have their welcome meeting at the start of the new academic year as usual, so that our new families can take advantage of the meetings. For all other classes the welcome meetings will take place on Monday 23rd July at the following times:

5.30pm White Horse class                                 6.00pm Sarum class

PFA News

We hope everyone felt the fete was a huge success, it certainly felt like a fabulous event.

We took nearly £3500 on the day (due to the heat no doubt, almost £1000 passed across the bar alone).

We hope you enjoyed all the entertainment:

The Devizes School of Dance put on a tremendous display despite uneven terrain and the warm weather – well done for the wonderful display and many thanks to them all.

Ben the Juggler was a riot and his second more intimate performance was really appreciated by all who stayed for being in the cool shade near the woods.

We had a huge amount of help on the day from both parents and villagers alike.

A special thanks must go to the Wilson girls for their tireless efforts on the day.  The children really got into the spirit of the event.

The total raised to date is £1460 to go towards the playing field equipment, other projects and activities which will benefit the children hugely.

Huge thanks to everyone involved, it was a team effort on the day and what a team!

We’d love everyone to feel a part of the PFA community whether it be just by hearing about what’s going on, attending events or helping out in some way.
