Newsletter 32 – 25th May 2012

Dear Parents

Last day of this half term is Friday 1st June and we return to school on Tuesday 12th June – please note that Monday 11th June is a TD day.

Pottery Club For all those who have signed up for pottery club, your first session is on Tuesday 12th June from 3.00pm – 4.00pm.

Bath University Sports Campus Trip As part of our theme on Olympics, we have arranged for every child in the school to go to Bath University Sports Campus for a day of coaching by specialists in the facilities used by some of the Olympians for their training. This will take place on Friday 15th June. The coaching has been arranged so that each year group has events suited to their age and ability. Please complete the form and return it by Friday 1st June with the £10 donation so that we can be sure we have enough contributions to go ahead with the trip.

Langford Lakes trip The children in Stonehenge class (FS and Y1 children) went to Langford Lakes to do some pond dipping and to explore different habitats and minibeasts. The weather was wonderful and they had a great day out. Through these trips, we inspire the children to forge ahead with their learning as they have so much to write about and research. My thanks, as ever, to Mrs Abbott and the teaching assistants, and all the volunteers who make these trips possible.

Warmer Weather As we approach the warmer summer weather (with a bit of luck!) we ask that all children bring a sun hat into school. If they do not have a hat and if it is particularly hot, we may arrange that they play only in the shade. Also, every child should have a water bottle with them every day since they need to drink regularly through the course of the day to stay well hydrated. We are not permitted to apply sun screen to children so please ensure that this has been done before they leave home if it is necessary.

Indian Link The director of the Indian school, The Mathieson Institute, that we have links with will be in school on Tuesday 29th May to run Indian music workshops with each class. The children always enjoy this input and it is interesting for them to find out a bit about how children in other countries are educated.

Fire Safety Children in White Horse class (Y1 and Y2) and in Silbury class (Y5 and Y6) have had a fire safety course delivered by the education division of the local fire brigade. They always find this useful as it reminds them of simple, sensible precautions to take to prevent or deal with a fire related emergency.

Keyboard lessons I am delighted to be able to offer keyboard lessons once again at our school. The teacher, Ms Lisa Clarke, is an accomplished musician and music teacher who has recently returned from abroad. Lessons will be 20 minutes long and will cost £7 per lesson. There is a short, 4 week course at a special price of £25 being offered through the summer term, on Tuesdays after lunch. Please contact the school office for a letter if you wish your child to start.

Sports Stars Holiday Club We are pleased to be able to offer this Holiday Club once again in the coming half term – it will run from Wednesday 6th June to Friday 8th June.

Holiday club will also run during the summer holiday in the following two weeks: Monday 23rd July to Friday 27th July and again Monday 13th August to Friday 17th August. The club is very popular and the children who attend have a great time. Sign up forms have been sent out to all children.

Children’s Movie Night  Big Idea presents “Lord of the Beans” (CCLI 1198824) on Friday 25th May, from 6-8 pm at Church of the Holy Saviour, Erlestoke. We’ll be having light supper and pudding! Donations of £1 for food are gratefully accepted.  Children under five must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Pre-School cake sale at 3pm on the school playground on Friday 1st June. Please come along and buy some lovely cakes.

Diamond Jubilee Celebrations – Friday 1st June In order to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, we thought it would be fun if the children came into school dressed in red, white and blue rather than their uniforms!

In addition, the PFA are going to hold a “make your own crown” competition which will be open to all children. There will be a small prize for the best crown in each of the Foundation, KS1 and KS2 groups. So let your imagination go and wear your Diamond Jubilee Crown creations into school next Friday too!

Summer Fun Evening – Friday 6th July  Thank you to all those who have offered to help at the fun evening. We are looking for more helpers, so if you can help out please do come forward! Thank you!

Best wishes

Mercedes Henning
