Dear Parents

Assessments Most of the children in our school will have a week of little summative assessments next week. We ask that you do not worry about these at all, and do not allow your child to worry about them. The children are all well prepared, they know what their own personal achievements should be and they will enjoy the challenge of the assessments. The afternoons will be filled with creative learning activities and we find that the children enjoy this week. It is good for the children to have sensible early bedtimes through this week (as it should be for every school night!) and to have a good breakfast before they come to school. That is all that needs to be done at home to support them.

The results of the KS2 SATS (for Year 6 children) will only be released to us by the government in early July. Once we have the data, we need to analyse them and separate them out into individual reports and we will then make sure these are sent out to parents. These assessments provide a snapshot of the children’s achievement in Literacy and Maths and, whilst we are always very proud of the outstanding results our children achieve in these tests, we are just as proud of all the other learning and life skills that are gained throughout the year. These skills will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives whatever their academic ability.

The teacher’s assessment of children’s achievement will be reported to parents in the written reports, which will go out on Friday 30th June. Please make sure you are able to log in to the Parent Portal so that you can access the reports when they are published. Staff at the office can help you if you have forgotten your log-in details.

Class Splits At this time of year, some parents may start to feel anxious about which classroom their child will be in next year. We ask you to trust us to make the very best decision for your child – every child is important and we will make sure that we do the very best for each one.

If your child is in Year 1, Year 4 or Year 5, they will be in a split group. However, they will continue to follow the Year 1, Year 4 and Year 5 curriculum, whichever classroom they are in. Our analyses show that children do equally well in all classrooms – they are tested on the same tests at the end of the year, and statistics show that their progress and attainment meet or exceed the targets equally well in all classrooms in our school.

Please do not put pressure on your child to try to achieve some goal of being in a specific classroom. This leads to anxiety and a sense of having “let you down” if they do not achieve the goal. Decisions about class splits are made on the basis of the child’s academic achievement through the year and the number of children in each year group and classroom. We can assure you that children are taught at the edge of their learning regardless of which classroom they are in.

Music Concert A reminder about our music concert which takes place on Tuesday 23rd May at 5.00pm. Many of our children who do peripatetic music and music clubs will have been invited to play in this concert. Please check with your child whether they are involved. If your child cannot attend for some reason, please let us know as we have a very full programme. Children are asked to wear formal or semi- formal clothing (not school uniform) if they are performing in the concert.

STOMP Workshop We are very grateful to our PFA who have given us most of the money required to commission a STOMP workshop for each class. This outreach comes through the famous junk band STOMP – they make music by using brooms and brushes, dustbins, pots and pans and all sorts of other household items and junk. The music is rhythmic and entails lots of movement and dance as well as percussion. We are delighted to be able to provide this for our children – the workshop will take place on Wednesday 14th June.

After School Care Coral Cove in Devizes operate a scheme whereby they collect your child/ren from school. They do however need several children to be picked up on any one day from the same school to make it worthwhile. Please contact them for further details if you are interested in this service on 01380 739944.

Lataca have asked us to remind parents to send in their orders by the Friday morning of the week before lunch is needed please.

Today welcomes the start of Jane’s Summer Friday Tuck Shops. This is something that Jane ran with from the start – she took her idea, turned it into one of our favourite events – and raises a lot of money for the PFA too!

Sadly, like many of our fabulous Year 6 parents, Jane will be moving on the next school year. It would be a shame to lose our wonderful Tuck Shop too. We’re appealing for an individual or a team who may want to take the Tuck Shop on and make it their own. Jane is on hand to share all her tricks of the trade. Please approach Jane or any of the PFA team if this is something that interests you.

Talking about the next school year, Debi, our current Chair, is planning to step away from the role due to work commitments. This is just a short entry to ‘plant the seed’ with any Mum, Dad or Guardian out there who may enjoy this role. There is no reason why you can’t shake things up a bit or stick to traditional expectations. Either way, Debi, the Deputies and Secretary will be on hand to help run individual events and do a comprehensive handover – otherwise I think we’d miss it too much!!!! Before we get too carried away with next year, time to think about the Summer Fayre (July 7), other exciting events and focus on redirecting fundraising in light of school budget cuts. Please join us for a meeting after drop-off next Friday morning (May 12).
