Wonderful Children We are, as ever, very proud of our children, many of whom have completed their summative assessments this week. They always face these challenges with cheerful courage and optimism, and always aim to do their best. They have enjoyed this week which involves a lot of project work, PE and art in between the assessments. Thank you to our families who have supported their children so beautifully through the year.
Forest of Dean Children in Years 5 and 6 will be leaving for their residential trip next week, Wednesday 23rd – Friday 25th May. They will take part in lots of adventurous activities such as caving, climbing, and zip wire so they need old clothes. They need to be at school at the usual time, with a small travel bag that they have packed (and can re-pack) themselves. Kits lists have been sent out. Please make sure all prescription medication and travel tablets have been given to the teacher on duty with the relevant paperwork and directions for dispensing. No other medications may be brought. No mobile phones or other electronic devices may be brought – a book or a pack of cards can be useful in the few minutes of down time that they will have. This is a wonderful trip on which the children learn a lot about team work, courage, initiative, independence and having fun.
Trophies If your child won one of our floating Trophies last year, would you kindly return it? We need to start to prepare for the awards ceremony at the end of the term.
NSPCC workshops Attached to this letter please find some information about workshops that will be delivered in school on 12th June and 19th June by the NSPCC. These workshops help children to develop strategies that will keep them safe from bullying and abuse. The best way to ensure that children are safe is by equipping them with the skills they need to keep themselves safe and to ask for help. We ask for a £1 donation towards the workshops and towards the work of the NSPCC.
Music Concert Next Week If your child takes music lessons in school, their tutor may well have decided that they are playing at a good enough standard to perform in the concert. Check with your child – they will know. Your child should wear something smart to perform – not school uniform. All parents are welcome to come along on Tuesday 22nd May at 5.00pm to enjoy our amazingly talented young musicians’ performances.
Class Splits At this time of year, some parents may start to feel anxious about which classroom their child will be in next year. We ask you to trust us to make the very best decision for your child – every child is important and we will make sure that we do the very best for each one.
If your child is in Year 1, Year 4 or Year 5, they will be in a split group. However, they will continue to follow the Year 1, Year 4 and Year 5 curriculum, whichever classroom they are in. Our analyses show that children do equally well in all classrooms – they are tested on the same tests at the end of the year, and statistics show that their progress and attainment meet or exceed the targets equally well in all classrooms in our school.
Please do not put pressure on your child to try to achieve some goal of being in a specific classroom. This leads to anxiety and a sense of having “let you down” if they do not achieve the goal. Decisions about class splits are made on the basis of the child’s academic achievement through the year and the number of children in each year group and classroom. We can assure you that children are taught at the edge of their learning regardless of which classroom they are in.
Attendance at School If your child’s attendance at school falls below 90%, they are going to be falling behind their peers in all areas of school life. We see a really significant drop in outcomes for children with lower attendance. Effectively, they are missing half a day a week, or half a term a year. Whilst children should stay home if they are very ill, please try to ensure your child comes to school every day possible – through regular attendance, they gain confidence, joy in school and success.
Piano Lessons There will be piano lessons next week, the last week of term. Then in the new term, they start again in the week commencing 18th June.
Performances by children taking music lessons outside of school Everyone who has applied for a place at our music event on Tuesday 12th June at 10.45am has been given a place in the programme. Please make sure your child has been well prepared for this. Parents/carers are welcome to attend the performance which will probably last no longer than 20 minutes or half an hour.
Reading to your children Thank you to all those families where reading to children is a well-established routine in the home. Research shows that children who have books read to them do better at school in all areas, not just reading and writing. It is recommended that parents continue to read to children who are already good readers – right up until early teenage years – since this continues to have positive impact on their outcomes. Chatting together about a book that you are sharing is a very special thing to do.
Communication with School It is really important to us that channels of communication are kept open with our families – we are partners in the education of your children and the more we cooperate with each other, the better your child’s education will be. As well as this weekly newsletter, you can find information, policies and photos on the school website at www.holy-trinity.co.uk, you can see short updates on our Facebook page, you can let us know about anything at all through phone calls, emails, notes in the homework books/reading records or by catching the teacher briefly at the beginning or end of the school day. If you need a longer meeting, you are most welcome to make an appointment to see your child’s teacher whenever you would like to do so.
