Newsletter 25 – 21st March 2014

Dear Parents

Annual General Meeting  Remember the AGM on Tuesday 25th March at 6.30pm! This is a great opportunity to find out a bit more about our school and to meet our governors and other parents. Please do come along – you will be made most welcome.

Strike Action Thanks to the loyalty and commitment of our teachers, we will be open on Wednesday.  I am extremely grateful to our teaching staff who have made the decision to come to work on a strike day, even though their terms and conditions of employment have been eroded by the Government’s policies.  We are very fortunate to have teachers who prioritise the children’s welfare and learning so highly.

Grounds Development Earlier this academic year, we asked the children what equipment they would like us to purchase to improve their experience of playtimes. One idea that came from almost all of the classes was a rebound wall – so that they can kick or throw or hit balls against the wall safely and hone their skills. This has now been commissioned and is at the south end of our school field. We have also purchased equipment to help them enjoy playing football safely on the field during playtimes – and so far this initiative seems to be working very successfully. Our children show a good understanding of how to work well as a member of a team and how to ensure that games can be played sensibly so that as many people as possible can have fun. My thanks to Mr Amor for working hard to ensure the success of this project.

Mothering Day Service Do come along to a Mothering Day service at St Peter’s in Great Cheverell on Sunday 30th March at 11.00am. Children will do some readings, prayers and songs, and all mothers and grandmothers will receive a lovely plant.

Parent Portal Please note that all newsletters and other notes, letters and communications from the school as well as the school menus will be posted on the Parent Portal so if you have lost a letter from school or your child did not bring it home, you will be able to log in to the portal and find a copy. You will also be able to see your child’s attendance record on the portal. If you need to register, go to the parent portal tab on the left hand side of the school website and click on register, then follow the instructions.  If you are registered but have forgotten your password, we can easily re-set it. Just let us know at the office.

Sports relief and other fund raising Stonehenge and White Horse classes will be raising funds for sports relief on Friday 28th March next week. Notices have gone out about this to the children in this phase – they can dress in red and white clothes, can get sponsorship if they wish and will run around the field to support the charity. The rest of the school will also be taking part in a “Dress Down” day – in honour of the sunshine and spring, they will be dressing in yellow –  for a £1 donation each to go towards PFA funds. This money will go towards an Easter party in the pavilion on the last day of term after school.

School Choir Ms Sharman and Mr Whichello have very kindly agreed to run a school choir through the summer term. There are no auditions for this choir, which is open to any child in Y3 to Y6 who enjoys singing and who would like to sing in the school concert on July 10th. The choir practices will take place on Mondays after school from 3.00pm – 4.00pm. There will be 8 practices, from Monday April 28th to Monday 7th July (discounting holidays and TD days). There will be a charge of £1.50 for each session, making a total of £12, payable in advance. The choir will be singing pop songs old and new, blues, swing and traditional songs from England and Ireland. If your child would like to take part, please complete the slip at the bottom of this newsletter.

NB Choir practices will continue after school on Mondays in the autumn term for those singing in the Devizes Eisteddfod. Details of this will follow in September.

Dropping children off If you are late dropping your child off, please make sure you come right into the school with them and see them safely into our care. Children running across an empty playground can make wrong decisions and if there are no adults nearby, their safety might be compromised.

Holiday Club Sports Stars will be running the Holiday Club at our school in the Easter holiday, from 7th April to the 11th April, and in the summer holiday from 28th July to 1st August and a second week from 11th August to 15th August. Flyers will go out nearer the time to sign up.

Edington Under 5’s – come along on Thursday mornings from 10am-12pm in Edington Village Hall. Contact Vanessa Lescott 07776 133099.

Children’s Movie Night… Come and enjoy food, film and fun with friends, on Friday 21st March from 6-8pm in Erlestoke Church. All are welcome but children under five must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. A light supper and pudding will be provided; donations of £1 for food per person are gratefully accepted.
