Newsletter 23 – 7th March 2014

Dear Parents

Annual General Meeting  The governors of our school would like to invite all parents to an AGM, to be held on Tuesday 25th March at 6.30pm. The Chair of Governors, Mr David Graham-Wheeler, will give a short report on various aspects of the school and there will be the opportunity for you to ask questions or make comments on any area of school life or governance.  This is a great opportunity to find out a bit more about our school and to meet our governors and other parents. Please do come along – you will be made most welcome.

Parent/Teacher Meetings The confirmation of your precise times for these meetings went out on slips on Tuesday – please check your child’s bag for them. A reminder that the appointments are 10 minutes long and we have to be quite strict about this so that other parents are not held up waiting in a queue. If you need a longer meeting, please feel free to make an appointment with your child’s teacher at some other time.

Braeside Residential Trip My thanks to our wonderful staff and volunteers who worked so hard to ensure that the children had a good time on this trip. Thanks also to our supportive parents who transported their children to Braeside. We were lucky with the weather and the children had a wonderful time. As ever, they behaved beautifully and were a credit to their families and the school. Photos will be shared at a Sharing Assembly soon.

Pancake races We had a great morning of pancake races on Tuesday. The races are run as relays and the points scored are included in the final totals on Sports Day. This is a lovely way of remembering the church’s liturgical year – Shrove Tuesday being the day before the start of Lent. Red team won this event (they usually do – Red team clearly have a real talent for tossing pancakes and running!). My thanks to the PFA who worked hard to ensure the success of the races and to Mr Amor and all the teachers and TAs who made sure everything ran smoothly and efficiently.

Moderation of work We are very careful at this school to make sure that our assessment of children’s progress is as accurate as possible. We have meetings with other schools, our local secondary school, LA officials and other specialists where we discuss the levels we would assess children to be working at, using examples of their work, so that we can be sure that our judgements are correct and in agreement with other stakeholders. Mrs Abbott is employed by the Local Authority to ratify and moderate the judgements of other practitioners who work in the Foundation Stage, so every now and then she will have a morning or afternoon out of school to carry out this work. All our teachers support other local teachers and TAs – with advice and by allowing them to come and observe teaching in the school. The outstanding results we achieve in our school are a tribute to the hard work of our outstanding teachers.

Punctuality Thank you to all our parents who are so careful about ensuring that children are dropped off between 8.30am and 8.40am – coming in with their classmates means they can enjoy the first part of the morning, and coming in late is more difficult for them when everyone has settled down. Thanks also to all who pick up promptly after school and after-school clubs. Children are tired by this time and teachers and coaches have other things they need to do so we value promptitude. On Tuesday there are two sports clubs running, one finishing at 4.00pm (with Mr Amor or Mrs Garraway) and the other at 4.15pm (with Mr Moon). We apologise for the confusion this has caused and ask you to check which club your child has signed up to.

For your diary A reminder that the French concert is on Thursday 3rd July in the morning. Sports day is on Wednesday 9th July in the morning, followed by a picnic with your child on the field. The music concert for children who take part in music lessons at our school is on Thursday 10th July at 6.00pm. The school Eucharist is on Tuesday 15th July at 2.00pm – this year the Archdeacon of Wilts will be our celebrant and, as ever, the Year 6 children will perform a liturgical dance, and other children will do readings and prayers.   The last day of the school year is Wednesday 23rd July and we return to school on Tuesday 2nd September.

Mothering Day Service We have been invited to take part in a Mothering Day service at St Peter’s in Great Cheverell on Sunday 30th March at 11.00am. Children will have the opportunity to do some readings, prayers and songs, and all mothers and grandmothers will receive a lovely plant.
