Newsletter 22 – 28th February 2014

Dear Parents

Annual General Meeting  The governors of our school would like to invite all parents to an AGM, to be held on Tuesday 25th March at 6.30pm. The Chair of Governors, Mr David Graham-Wheeler, will give a short report on various aspects of the school and there will be the opportunity for you to ask questions or make comments on any area of school life or governance.  This is a great opportunity to find out a bit more about our school and to meet our governors and other parents. Please do come along – you will be made most welcome.

Parent/Teacher Meetings The slips for these meetings went out on Tuesday – please make sure they are returned to school by Monday 3rd March, and we will send out the slip with your precise appointment time on Tuesday 4th March – please check your child’s bag for this.

Braeside Residential Trip Please note – this year parents are dropping their children off and picking them up at the Braeside Educational Centre, post code SN10 2AP, in Devizes. The dates are as follows:

Year 3 children:          Drop off on Wednesday 10th March at 10.00am

Pick up on Thursday 6th March at 2.30pm

Staff: Mrs Mehaffy, Mrs Garraway, Mrs Trusler, Mr Mehaffy and Mr Edwards

Year 4 children:          Drop off on Thursday 6th March at 10.00am

Pick up on Friday 7th March at 2.30pm

Staff: Mrs Mehaffy, Mrs Twentyman, Mrs Trusler, Mr Mehaffy and Mr Edwards

Please make sure you have checked the kit list carefully. All medications must be handed to the teacher on duty, with a permission form (available from the school office) and clear instructions for dispensing. Only prescription medication can be dispensed. No mobile phones or electronic devices may be taken by the children.  Please do not include sweets/snacks in their luggage – plenty of good food is provided. Children must be able to carry their own luggage.

This is always a wonderful event and the children learn an enormous amount about independence, team work, resilience and courage, and have the chance to take part in great outdoor activities, spend a night away from home and have fun with their peers.

My sincere thanks to all the staff who give up so much of their time to make this trip possible. Increasingly, few primary schools offer residential trips, and even fewer offer them to the younger children since it is a huge responsibility and very exhausting, as you can imagine, to be on duty with a group of young children day and night.

Lataca The date for the special Pancake Day meal is Tuesday 4th March, not as previously advertised!

Donations to the school We have been very fortunate recently to have received two substantial donations – one from the Great Cheverell Parish Council and the other from The Soap Box Derby Committee.  As a small school, running on a limited budget, we are always tremendously grateful for donations which help us provide the very best possible education for our children. We are very lucky to be part of such a supportive and generous community – our thanks go to both these village organisations that have helped us so much.

Forest of Dean Residential Trip Please note that the next payment is due.

Cake Tins – there are still several cake tins outside the office which need collecting, we shall be removing them next Friday if they haven’t been collected by then. Also if you have picked up someone else’s by mistake please return it/them – we are missing a clear tub and a purple plate.

Mothering Day Service We have been invited to take part in a Mothering Day service at St Peter’s in Great Cheverell on Sunday 30th March at 11.00am. Children will have the opportunity to do some readings, prayers and songs, and all mothers and grandmothers will receive a lovely plant. If you would like to take part in this event, please complete the slip below so that we can rehearse with children beforehand.

Transition to next school We work hard to ensure that our children are as well prepared as possible for their transition into and out of our school. Mrs Abbott and I visit Old School Nursery (our main feeder nursery school) so that we are familiar to the children, and we have some joint activities between their children and our Foundation Stage. Our Year 6 children will start a programme of induction into their secondary school in the summer term.

Holiday Club Sports Stars will be running the Holiday Club at our school in the Easter holiday, from 7th April to the 11th April, and in the summer holiday from 28th July to 1st August and a second week from 11th August to 15th August. Flyers will go out nearer the time to sign up.

Edington Under 5’s – come along on Thursday mornings from 10am-12pm in Edington Village Hall. Contact Vanessa Lescott 07776 133099.

Children’s Activity Morning – for children in years 1-6 with games, stories and crafts, held in Ebenezer Baptist Church in West Lavington on Saturday 8th March from 11am-12.30pm. Further details available from Kate Andrews 01225 767229.

Second Hand Uniform Sale will be held today – 28th February!

Best wishes
