Newsletter 21 – 24th February

Dear Parents

Parent- teacher meetings These will take place on Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th March. Slips to book a meeting have been sent out and must be returned by Thursday 1st March. The final precise appointment times will be sent back to you on Friday 2nd March – do look out for these notes. We would like to remind you that you are welcome to make an appointment to see your child’s teacher at any time – but these parents’ evenings are an opportunity for a short, formal discussion on your child’s progress. We aim to give you an appointment as close to your preferred time as possible, but it is not always possible, as you can imagine with over 100 families in the school. We also try to coordinate meetings for those families who have more than one child in the school where possible.

Ukele Club Mr Gundry will run one more 6 week course of this club and then it will stop for this year. There are a few spaces left on Tuesday and one or two on Friday so if your child would like to try this club, do come and ask at the office for details. Because this is the second part of the 12 week course, only children in KS2 will be able to start the club at this point. It has proven to be a very popular club and Mr Gundry has told us on a number of occasions that he enjoys coming to our school the best of all his schools because our children are so well behaved, enthusiastic and fun to teach.

Church-school links We have once again been invited to join with the congregation of Great Cheverell to celebrate Mothering Sunday on Sunday 18th March at 9.30am at St Peter’s church in Great Cheverell. If you would like your child to take part in this service (there will be the opportunity for them to do some of the readings and prayers, and mothers will be given flowers by the children at the end of the service) please do complete the slip at the end of this letter. This is always a lovely service, centred on mothers and children. We do encourage anyone who is interested, even if you do not usually go to church, to come along. Once we have the slips, we will allocate a role for each child who is attending. Slips do need to be back with us by Friday 2nd March so that we have time to rehearse with the children.

Pancake Races We had a wonderful (though chilly) morning of pancake races on Tuesday to mark the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday.  Red team won and the points scored in this event will be added to the Sports Day events as usual. My thanks, as ever, to our PFA who work so hard and efficiently to ensure that the children have such good experiences at school. We like to mark the church’s liturgical year in interesting and exciting ways such as this event.

Police visit  We had a visit from the local police who talked to the children about their role in the community and showed them their kit, including a rather fascinating car! My thanks to police officer Gareth Milne who has worked with me to ensure that this input is useful for our children. If you need to contact the police about a non-urgent matter, they ask that you use the phone number 101.

SATS We like to offer parents the chance to come into school and find out a bit more about the external Government testing of the children in Y2 and Y6 (the so-called SATS).  You will be given the chance to try out some of the papers that they will be completing and to ask any questions you might have. This event is usually very poorly attended but I do ask parents of children in any year group to consider coming along. This meeting will be next week on Monday 27th February at 5.00pm. We have about 12 people who have signed up to come. Do feel free to come along even if you have not signed up.

Totem Pole Project On Wednesday 14th March after school, we will be offering families the chance to join us in the school hall to make a family “totem pole”. This will involve you and your child/ren engaging in a lovely craft project together with support from Belle Wiles, our PSA.  If you are interested in booking a place for this event, please collect a letter from the office.

Children’s Movie Night Come and enjoy a sizzling supper and a delicious dessert followed by two fantastic films.  Don’t miss it! Bring friends! From 6-8 pm today Friday 24th February in ErlestokeChurch.

Best wishes

Mercedes Henning
