Newsletter 21 – 10th February 2017

Dear Parents

Today is the last day of this half term. We all return to school on Monday 20th February. Have a wonderful, refreshing break!

Packed Lunches on Friday 24th February – Longleat Trip All school dinners on Friday 24th February will be packed lunches, since most of the children will be off site. Please make sure that you have ordered your packed lunch from Lataca if you wish to use their service.

If you would rather prepare your own packed lunch for your child, please make sure that it is easy for the child to manage and has wrappings that can be disposed of easily at the end. No glass bottles please!

No Sharing Assembly Because most of the children will be offsite, there will be no Sharing Assembly on Friday 24th February.

Performance at Sharing Assembly On Friday 10th March, at Sharing Assembly (2.15pm), all the children in White Horse class, Sarum class and Avebury class will be performing a song from the Lion King. They have spent many hours rehearsing this, with instruments and voice, having composed some elements themselves. It is a beautiful piece, with all the richness and complexities of a large ensemble of children aged 5 to 10 years, and we invite parents to come and enjoy this with us. My thanks to our very talented musical director, Ms Sharman, who does so much to ensure high quality music is performed and enjoyed in our school.

TD dates for 2017-18 We are announcing our TD dates for next year a little earlier this year at the request of parents – we hope that this will help you with your holiday plans for the coming year. The five days on which your children will not be in school in order to facilitate teacher training and planning are:

Friday 1st September

Thursday 4th January

Friday 5th January

Monday 4th June

Wednesday 25th July

Birds of Prey We had a wonderful display of birds of prey on Tuesday afternoon – with owls, falcons and kestrels in our school hall. The expert who brought them to our school was able to hold the children transfixed with his talk about their habits and biology.

From the Bishop Bishop Nicholas has created a guide for daily prayer and reflection to use during Lent. It is accessible via an app. Please follow this link which gives you more information, and details for the app. .

Encompass The school has been given the opportunity to take part in a project that will run jointly between schools and Wiltshire Police. Through this programme, police will report to schools, by the next school day, when a child or young person has been affected by a domestic abuse incident. ENCOMPASS will ensure that a designated member of the school staff, known as a Key Adult, will be told the information in confidence, to ensure that the school is able to make provision for possible difficulties experienced by children, or their families, who have been involved in, affected by or exposed to a domestic abuse incident. We are keen to offer the best support possible to all our pupils and we believe this will be beneficial for all those involved.

Devizes Safe Places Somewhere a child can go if anything goes wrong when they are out and about. Often a public place which will have a sticker in the window indicating that staff will take time to listen, help make a phone call and provide the child with somewhere to wait for their parent/friend if they need help. Look out for shops, libraries, doctor’s surgeries etc with the sticker in the window.

Gardening Club will start again on Monday the 20th February from 3pm – 4pm.

We have reserved places for those children who are interested from last year, and have a few spaces left for new joiners. Gardening Club grows vegetables in the raised beds, maintains the flower borders and pots, and the willow structures within the school grounds. This year we will be using our greenhouse for the first time so we hope to also grow produce for the cookery lessons.

If your child would like to join Gardening Club, please ask at the office for an application form. Places are limited to 12. We are reliant on parent helpers to run the club, and those children who are able to be regularly accompanied by an adult will have priority in joining over those who do not. The rest of applications will be decided on a first come, first served basis.
