Newsletter 20 – 22nd February 2013

Dear Parents

Parents’ meetings with teachers Please make sure that you have returned your Parents’ evening request slips by next week Thursday, 28th February, with your preferred date marked and your name clearly written. We shall arrange for a specific ten minute time slot which will be sent home on Thursday afternoon or Friday.  The meetings will take place on Wednesday 6th March from 3.15pm – 6.00pm and on Thursday 7th March from 6.00pm – 8.00pm. We aim to coordinate families who have siblings in school. It might not be possible to arrange for you to have the exact time slot you requested but we will do our best. Appointments last no longer than 10 minutes. If you feel that you need a longer meeting, please arrange this with your child’s teacher separately.

Reading Challenge As part of our drive to have more children reading for pleasure, we are asking you to send in a photograph of your child engaged in “Extreme Reading”.  They might be reading while in a tree, or while washing dishes, or while lying under their bed. Obviously, they must not be doing anything dangerous while reading! We will put all the photos on display to encourage children to take up a book, magazine, newspaper or computer and read for fun. We need all the photos in by Friday 1st March so that we can have the display put up during Book week which starts on Monday 4th March.

Wake and Shake Thank you very much to all the wonderful parents who join in Wake and Shake so enthusiastically. It sets a great example to all the children and is particularly important to the Year 6 children who work so hard to make this fun. If you do not wish to participate, please stand behind the children so that they can see the year 6 children in front.

Thinking Day Well done to the Brownies and Scouts who came to school today in their uniforms – if anyone is interested in joining the Guiding/Scouting movement, please contact Kath Harris or ask at the school.

Values Please give us your views on what the identifying values are that make our school so great. Is it the sense of love, or of responsibility? Honesty or generosity? Aspiration or confidence? Anything else? We are interested to know what you think. Write, phone, email or pop in and let us know.

Diocesan Advisor The senior advisor for Church schools in Salisbury diocese came to look at our school this week and was delighted with all she saw – the wonderful reflective worship, the clear sense of belonging to a loving community, the outstanding behaviour, the excellent learning – all confirmed her judgement that this is an outstanding Church school.

Works on the field You will have seen that we have made a start on the works to improve the access to and path around our field. We will have to wait for more funding (hopefully to arrive soon after Easter) in order to complete the works. The path remains slippery and we ask you to be careful as you use it.

School website  Please consult the website for latest news, the calendar of dates, photos, information, policies, the statutory documents relating to our Academy and the parent portal log-in.

Oxenwood A letter went home recently to the parents of children in year 3 & 4 asking if their child will be attending Oxenwood in May. There is no need to send payment at the moment, but more importantly, we would appreciate it if you would let us know whether or not your child is going so that we can finalise numbers. A copy of the letter is on the Parent Portal if you have mislaid it.

Children’s Movie Night… Come and enjoy food, film and fun with friends, Friday 22nd February from 6-8pm in Erlestoke Church. All are welcome but children under five must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. A light supper and pudding will be provided; donations of £1 for food are gratefully accepted.

Do you have any suitable books, children’s or adults, that you have read and enjoyed and would now like to donate to the PFA book sale?  We would welcome your donations and will be holding a Cake and Book Sale next week, 1st March 3pm, straight after sharing assembly in the school hall.  Please drop off your books at the school reception from Monday 25th Feb for collection by the PFA.  Many thanks.

Best wishes,

Mercedes Henning
