Newsletter 20 – 15th February 2019

Dear Parents

Today is the last day of this half term. We are all back to school on Monday 25th February 2019.

Paper Free Newsletters We are going to move to a paper free system for our weekly newsletters in the new half term. We will make sure that there are few “hard copies” available at the office but, since nearly everyone receives the newsletter electronically, and it is always available on the school website, it makes sense to reduce our paper and ink consumption through this measure. If you would prefer to continue to receive a paper copy of the newsletter, please let us know and we will make sure that your child is given one on Friday afternoons.

Salisbury Fire Station Trip As well as having the fire service in school to talk to our children about fire safety this month, we also took our two younger classes to Salisbury fire station. Children in White Horse class got to watch some model Tudor Houses being burnt (as part of their Fire of London topic). Children in both classes used the fire hose – what an experience! They then went to Salisbury cathedral (to see the baptismal font, a replica of which we have in school as a candle holder) and Salisbury museum, to find out about the history of firefighting through the ages. We are very fortunate that our families support us so strongly in our work to take children out on field trips – nearly all of our families help us pay for the coaches and entry tickets, so that we are able to afford to take the children to exciting places. Thank you to all our families.

Letter of Congratulation We received a letter of congratulation this week from the Director of Education in Wiltshire, for our outstanding results in the 2018 statutory assessments. She writes, “I congratulate you on the recently validated outcomes achieved by your pupils in 2018, which are amongst the best primary schools in Wiltshire.  We appreciate that these very good outcomes are due to the sustained commitment, hard work and success of your staff, governors and pupils and recognise that they could not have been achieved without your effective leadership and determination to remain focused on school improvement. I would like to offer my thanks to you and all at your school for your pursuit of the highest standards of educational achievement.”

Lost Property Please check your child’s belongings over the holiday and return anything which isn’t yours to school so that we can return it to the rightful owner.

Cycling into school We are very pleased with how many children walk or cycle into school each day – these families are making the roads outside our school safer and are helping the environment by not using cars. Thank you to all the parents to make sure their children are safe on the roads, particularly those who cycle. It is essential that children wear cycling helmets when cycling, even if the distance is quite short. A minor accident can result in horrific injury or death if they are not properly protected by a helmet.

Gardening Club Unfortunately Liz Read is not able to restart the Gardening Club for the year until after the Easter Holidays. Therefore the first meeting will be Monday 29th of April.  This will be the last year Liz runs the club and she is looking for someone or a group of people to take it forward. It would be a terrible pity if Gardening Club has to fall into abeyance because there are no volunteers to run it. Please do come forward if you would like to lead, or be part of a team that leads this really wonderful club. You could join us for a few months in the summer term to gain some idea of what is entailed. Help is always welcome, particularly in May and June this year, when help with watering would be much appreciated even if you don’t want to lead the club.

Gardening Club grows vegetables and fruit in the raised beds, maintains the flower borders and pots, and the willow structures within the school grounds. If your child would like to join Gardening Club please ask at the office for a permission form. Places are limited to 12. We are reliant on parent helpers to run the club, and those children who are able to be regularly accompanied by an adult will have priority in joining over those who do not.  The rest of applications will be decided on a first come, first served basis.

There is an Annual seed swap on Saturday 16 Feb at St Andrew’s Church between 10am and Noon. This is a good app (and free) for helping children with their times tables through practice and games (and there are also options for practising other maths skills that are related to the primary curriculum). We do not advocate children spending too much time in front of a screen, but if your child does want to play on their device, perhaps this is a worthwhile activity to promote.

PFA News

PFA Social Evening – Friday 10th May…please save the date! A chance for parents and friends of Holy Trinity to enjoy a relaxed evening. There will be nibbles and drinks available, and a raffle will be held to raise some funds. Venue will be confirmed after half term.
