Newsletter 20 – 12th February 2016

Dear Parents

Half term break Today, Friday 12th February, is the last day of this half term. Children return to school on Monday 22ndFebruary.

White Horse Class Celebration with Parents Thank you to all the parents and carers who came along to this event in White Horse class – what a lot of excitement there has been about this all week! It is great fun for children to host their parents in school and to share their work with them. My thanks also to Mrs Mehaffy and her team who worked so hard to ensure that everything ran smoothly and that all was ready in time for the grand opening.

Pancake races Thank you to our wonderful PFA who worked hard to make sure we had everything we needed for this event, and then helped with running it. This is one of the favourite events of the year for the children and the adults – the points scored will be added to Sports Day totals. Red team won this year – Mrs Mehaffy’s dream Pancake Race team doing it again!

Parent/Teacher Meetings You are formally invited to meet with your child’s class teacher again on Wednesday 9th March and Thursday 10th March. You will need to go online to book an appointment slot for this meeting, and the website for booking the slots will open on Monday 8th February. Each appointment is 10 minutes long and we are strict about adhering to that time. If you wish for a longer appointment after that meeting, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher to arrange this. The website for booking your appointment is:

Wiltshire Choir of the Year Competition (April 26th and May 14th) My thanks to Ms Sharman who does so much to encourage great music making in our school. The following message has been sent from her.

For those children who have already had a letter about this, choir practice will take place 3-4pm on Mondays after half term (starting on the first day back at school – Monday 22nd Feb). We will be in the Art Centre. Apologies to those who cannot make a Monday rehearsal this time. If there are any other confident singers in Years 4-6 who would like to see what singing in a competition choir is like, they would be welcome to join the first practice on 22nd Feb and see how they get on. For this competition, we’ll be singing ‘Double Trouble’ from the Harry Potter films and another, slower piece. Please email Ms Sharman if you have any queries:

Charity afternoon As part of our push to help the PFA raise funds for the outdoor classroom, we have arranged a charity afternoon to be held in school. We have had applications from 12 teams of children, 68 children in total, to run a wide variety of interesting and exciting stalls. Thank you to the adults who have been co-opted into helping their child’s team! It will be a wonderful afternoon, and the children learn so much through these events about entrepreneurship, team work, preparation and planning, as well as all the maths, literacy and other skills that are required to run a little stall in this way. All money raised from this will go to the PFA for the outdoor classroom.

New School Uniform Supplier Whilst you can still, of course, continue to purchase your school uniform through the Tesco school uniform service, we have also commissioned a shop in Devizes to stock our uniform in case you would rather buy it in this way.

This is: Red Direct Clothing Limited, 4/5 Snuff Street, Devizes, Wiltshire, SN10 1DU

Mathieson Trust Once again, we were delighted to welcome Anup Biswas, a concert cellist, to our school to run workshops on music and to tell us about the orphanage school he has founded and supports so strongly in Calcutta. It is a great opportunity for our children to find about how other children live and how they can find happiness even in difficult circumstances. We encourage our children to help others less fortunate than themselves whilst at the same time learning all that they can from these children – and there is so much to learn!

Gardening Club will start again on the 22nd of February from 3pm – 4pm. We have reserved places for those children who are interested from last year, and have spaces left for new joiners. If your child would like to join Gardening Club please ask for an application form from the school office. Places are limited to 12. We are reliant on parent helpers to run the club, and those children who are able to be regularly accompanied by an adult will have priority in joining over those who do not. The rest of applications will be decided on a first come, first served basis. This year we shall have to charge for sessions, and they will be invoiced in advance on a termly basis. The sessions will be £2.50 each. If you have any queries please call Liz Read on 07967 803420.
