Newsletter 2 – 13th September 2019

Dear Parents

Aerospace Museum Trip Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 went to the Aerospace Museum this week and had a marvellous time finding out about the history of flight, exploring the Concorde and investigating some engineering challenges that face designers of aircraft.

Reading and Maths afternoon for parents On Tuesday 15th October at 2.00pm we shall be running a little workshop for parents to give some ideas on how to ensure that their children have a good comprehension of text as they enjoy reading books with their children, and also some ideas for using maths in day-to-day life. Please do come along to this event. Supporting your child at home is a really effective way to help them make good progress. The final part of the workshop will involve sitting in your child’s classroom for ten minutes or so, listening to them read and enjoying the classroom experience.

Volunteers’ Update Everyone who volunteers to help in our school must have an update on safeguarding children, on health and safety and on data protection. We will run the update for volunteers on Thursday 3rd October at 2.30pm in the Art Centre.

Harvest We invite all parents to come to our Harvest Service on Thursday 26th September at 9.30am in St Peter’s church in Great Cheverell. We walk to the church, have a short celebration of thanksgiving for all that our beautiful world provides, and then walk back.

Sharing Assembly on Friday 27th September at 2.15pm will be on Harvest themes – do come along.

Parent Portal All parents, including those who are new to our school, should now be able to access our Parent Portal by registering and then using their own log in at If you have any problems with this, please contact the office. If you wish to pay online for school trips or any other school related event, you can do this through School Money – go to and sign in, then choose the bottom option “Schoolmoney parent login” and supply the details requested. School lunches need to be paid directly to Lataca. All correspondence about school dinners should be directed to Lataca. School milk should be paid directly to CoolMilk, unless your child is under 5 when the milk is free.

Facebook If you have not yet done so, please do “like” our school Facebook page where photographs and other snippets of news are published. It is fun to see some of the things we do in school. We never publish images of children that could be identifiable on Facebook or on our website, and we control strictly the images that are published in the press in order to protect our children’s privacy. So the images tend to be very distant or show just hands or backs of heads, but they give you an idea of what we doing.

E-Safety meeting As part of our commitment to keeping our children safe online, we have decided to commission an evening of support for parents from the highly recommended Karl Hopwood, who is an online safety expert. He works extensively with parents and schools around the country. Please see more on his website . He will be here at our school on Monday 21st October at 5.00pm to deliver a presentation on what you can do to help your child stay safe online. Children are at serious risk of harm if the adults around them are not vigilant when they are online. Please do put this date in your diary and try to have at least one representative from your family attend this event.

Head lice We know of a case of head lice in Sarum class – please check your child (even if they are not in Sarum). We have sent home a leaflet and if all families treat their children, we will hopefully eliminate the problem.

Flu Vaccination The school nurse will be in school on Thursday 10th October to give the flu vaccination to every child in school. Please go to to give your consent.

Parking I am receiving reports of parents parking dangerously on corners, at intersections and at points where the road is too narrow. The safety of our children has to be the absolute priority – more children of school-going age are hurt in traffic accidents that any other cause. Please park safely and responsibly. If you cannot find a safe parking space outside the school, please park further down in the village and walk up the beautiful Green Lane with your child. This short walk makes a serene and lovely start and end to the day. The police have been asked to patrol our school during pick up and drop off times and they will fine anyone flouting traffic laws.

Lavington Open Morning Parents and children in year 6 are welcome to visit the school on Friday 20th September. Please book online at
