Newsletter 15 – 6th January 2012

Dear Parents

Welcome back to all our children and their families. A special welcome to those children and families who are new to the school.

Winter Weather We very rarely close the school even if conditions are snowy or difficult. If conditions are very poor, check the school website, your mobile phone and the radio where we will notify you of closures. Please ensure that we have your current mobile number in case we do need to send out a text. Please send warm clothing every day since it can be bitterly cold on the field, and also send wellies in with your child if snow is forecast.

Dance Club I have been told that there are some difficulties with enrolling on line with the new dance club – please do send your forms into school with a cheque if you wish to enrol and we will make sure the dance school receives them.   The new dance will be contemporary and modern, energetic and fun for boys and girls. It will run on Wednesday afternoons, 3.00pm – 4.00pm. Slips need to be in by 11th January 2012 at the latest.  The club starts on 18th January 2012, for 6 weeks in the first instance and then on a rolling programme.

School Clubs Clubs run by members of staff on a voluntary basis will start in the week commencing Monday 16th January. These clubs include handbells club on Mondays at lunchtime, Winter sports club (including netball) on Tuesdays after school, music club on Thursday lunchtimes and chess club on Friday lunchtimes.  Gardening club and KS1 clubs will be announced in due course. Not all clubs are open to all children so do check with the office if you are interested in your child starting a new activity at school.

Clubs run by other providers Music club (on Tuesdays and Fridays after school), Dance club (on Wednesdays after school) and Judo (on Thursdays after school) have their own separate timetables issued by the providers. Judo club has already started, Music Club starts today for those attending the Friday class and Tuesday 10th January for those attending the Tuesday classes, and Dance club starts on 18th January.

Wake and Shake Thank you to all the parents and other adults who take part so willingly and enthusiastically in the Wake and Shake routines in the mornings. The Year 6 children put a lot of work into choreographing and preparing these routines and they are delighted when adults as well as children participate. It is also fun for the children to see adults enjoying the session and it is a great example on starting the day by getting a bit of exercise. We notice increasingly that many children have less and less stamina these days – it is particularly noticeable in the swimming pool – and we are keen to help children move around more and gain fitness, strength and agility.

Coffee Morning Thank you to Belle Wiles (our Parent Support Advisor) and to the parents who came along to our coffee morning on Wednesday, it was good to meet parents in a more informal setting. I do invite you all to join us at the coffee morning next term.

Holiday Club We will be offering a holiday club in the school, run as usual by Sports Stars, through the February half term (starting on Monday 13th February) and one week of the Easter half term (Tuesday 10th April until Friday 13th April). Sports Stars will be holding taster sessions during school time on Wednesday next week for children to get an idea of the kinds of activities on offer. This club has proven very popular with many children coming back year after year.

Primary School Applications If your child is due to start school in September 2012 (if they were born between 1st September 2007 and 31st August 2008)), you need to make sure your application reaches County Hall by noon on 15th January at the very latest. If you are late with your application, you might not get a place in your first choice school, even if you live in the designated area. Application forms can be found online

or in paper form at this school or at your child’s preschool or nursery.

Free School Meals A reminder to parents that if you are in receipt of certain benefits, you may be eligible for Free School Meals. Forms are available from the office to complete and send off and you will be informed by the authorities whether you are eligible or not. The information is treated in the strictest confidence.

Shoe Boxes Mrs Garraway has asked for donations of shoe boxes to be handed in to Sarum class as soon as possible for a project.

Absence Letters Thank you to parents for responding to the recent request for letters explaining absence from school. Occasionally letters do not make it the office for one reason or another and we apologise if you have duplicated information. It is a statutory requirement to maintain an updated register so we thank you for your cooperation.

Potterne Springs WI starts this Monday, 9th January from 8pm – 10pm at the scout centre in Potterne Wick.  If you would like to join this new group then please come along or contact Mary on 01380722169.

Recycling ink cartridges and mobile phones.  There is a collection box for toner and ink cartridges and mobile phones near the office. No toner bottles, ribbons or Epson ink jet cartridges. Empty ink cartridges will need to be packaged in a protective bag and mobiles similarly along with their battery. We will receive funds for the school as a result of our recycling so would encourage you to take part if you can.

Best wishes

M Henning
