Dear Parents

Salisbury Trip Thank you to everyone who ensured that the KS1 trip to Salisbury was such a success. We have seen some great writing from the children in response to this trip. The mediaeval topic has resulted in great projects such as trebuchet design and building, newspaper reports on the Battle of Agincourt, and wonderful art images based on Paolo Uccello’s painting of the Hunt at Night.

If you think you may have overlooked payment for this trip, we would still be very grateful to receive any funds outstanding.

Pantomime We are delighted that, as a result of the generosity of our PFA and our governors, we will be able to take the children to the pantomime with no charge to parents. The PFA have bought all the tickets for the show (over £1400) and the governors have put aside enough to cover the cost of the coaches from the school budget. We are aware that it has been an expensive term for parents and I am very pleased that we are able to offer this great opportunity to our children without having to ask for donations.  Our very sincere thanks to the PFA and to all who have contributed to their work – such generosity makes these exciting events possible.

Please do make sure your permission slips are returned to the school by Friday 29th November.

There will be no hot dinners on Friday 6th December – please make sure you send a packed lunch in with your child on that day.

No Sharing Assembly on 6th December Please be aware that, because of the pantomime trip, there will be no Sharing Assembly on Friday 6th December.

Recorder Concert Instead of our usual format for Sharing Assembly on Friday 13th December, we will have our Christmas recorder concert. This will take place at the usual time of 2.15pm – come along and enjoy our young musicians performing their Christmas repertoire.

Eisteddfod We are very proud of our Eisteddfod choir who came first in the Carol Singing class and gained a distinction in the Choral class. What a tremendous achievement!  Our very warmest thanks to Ms Sharman, the choir mistress, who has worked to so hard to organise and prepare the pieces and to rehearse with the children so carefully, and to Mrs Edwards who has given up lunch times and afternoons to accompany the children on the piano. And, of course, a very big thank you to the children who were so committed and worked so hard to reach this outstanding level. 

Events coming up this term (please do diarise these dates):

  • Handbell club will be holding a Handbell and Carol service on Thursday 5th December at 6.00pm in the school hall – do come along, enjoy the handbells and sing some carols with us. The PFA have very kindly agreed to provide refreshments for this event as well.
  • PFA to decorate the school whilst children are at the pantomime on Friday 6th December.
  • Recorder concert    Friday 13th December 2.15pm
  • Christmas plays:   Monday 16th December – KS1 at 10.00am and KS2 at 1.30pm

Tuesday 17th December – KS1 at 5.00pm and KS2 at 6.30pm

Wednesday 18th December – KS1 at 5.00pm and KS2 at 6.30pm

The PFA will be serving refreshments at these events – my thanks to them for this initiative.

  • Carol Service at Erlestoke Church at 9.30am on Thursday 19th December –do come along and share this with us.
  • PFA preparing for and clearing Christmas party and Christmas decorations  on Thursday 19th December

Road Safety posters Well done to the winners and all the entrants to the road safety poster competition, emphasising the 20 mph limit through our village. Thanks to the parish council who provided the book tokens for prizes and also helped judge the posters.


I like to present a very short summary of some of our policies in this newsletter each year – please note that the full policies can be read on our website, or if they have not yet been published online, then you can request copies at the school office. This week we will look at the Admissions policy.

The admissions policy of Holy Trinity Church of England Primary Academy is that, while there are adequate places, we will offer a place to all applicants irrespective of gender, religion, ethnicity or country of origin, disability or academic ability. We can accept 150 children into our school (at present we have 149). Class sizes are limited to 30 in the FS and KS1 classes, and our governors have set a limit of 32 in KS2 classes (there is no official limit to class size in KS2 and we could be forced to take more by an appeal panel).

 If there are more applications for places than places available, the criteria on the admissions policy apply. This means that looked after children and other vulnerable children are given the first places. After that, children who live in our designated area who have a sibling in the school are offered places, then all others who live in our designated area. After this, places are offered to those with siblings in our school but who live outside the designated area, those outside the designated area who would like a Christian faith education for their children (and this has to be upheld by their vicar or pastor) and then all others  who have applied from outside the designated area. In each category, in the event of a “tie break”, distance from the school is used to separate out which child shall be offered a place. Our designated area includes Great and Little Cheverell, Erlestoke and Coulston. Fewer than half of the children in our school come from the designated area, and, without the children from further afield, we would be struggling to stay open since 70 children is the minimum expected for a primary school in Wiltshire. If a child is not offered a place in our school, the parents have the right to appeal that decision in front of an independent panel.

Forest of Dean  A reminder that the second instalment of £35 towards the Forest of Dean trip is due to be paid in November, if you have chosen to pay by instalments.

Childrens Movie Night Come and enjoy food, film and fun with friends on Friday 22nd November from 6 to 8pm in Erlestoke Church. All are welcome but children under five must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. A light supper and pudding will be provided; donations of £1 per person for food are gratefully accepted.

Christmas Puddings  Don’t feel like making a Christmas pudding but feel that a bought one isn’t quite the same? Why not come along to Dairy House Farm, Edington, BA13 4NP on Saturday the 23rd November to a Stir Up Coffee morning in aid of Edington Church. Bring your own pudding bowel and fill it with Christmas pudding to take home to cook. Entry is £1.50 (children free) for coffee and a biscuit. Pudding £4 per lb. There will be other things to buy and a children’s activity corner making stained glass(paper) windows.


Cake Sale/School Uniform Sale – Friday 29th November  Get those mixing bowls ready, for the first cake sale this academic year!! The PFA would love your biscuits and cakes to sell on this day, please bring in your contributions on the morning of Friday 29th November. There will be a stock clearance from Scholars with a few sweatshirts and polo shirts available at cost price. There will also be a wide range of good quality second hand uniform – come and grab a bargain!!

If you have any uniform that could be sold on, then just drop it into the school reception next week.

“Bags of Opportunity” textile recycling on Monday 2nd December – please bring along your bags of recycling to school at drop off time. We shall be running this scheme on the first Monday of every month.
