Parents and Friends Association (PFA) Our very sincere thanks to Mrs Downing and her team who have provided such great experiences for our children and families in the past year. And we welcome the new Chair of the PFA Mrs Conlon and Secretary, Mrs Knox, as well our Treasurer for another year, Mr Cleveley. Thank you for your courage in taking on these roles, and for your commitment to helping us provide the best possible education for our children. Please do consider taking part in the PFA activities, meetings and events if you can – even just occasionally dipping into their work is a great way to make friends and to support the school.
Volunteer Induction afternoon Thank you to all the volunteers who came along to the annual update on Child Protection, Health and Safety and Data Protection. We are very grateful to those who give up their time to help us with various tasks in school. If you missed the meeting please contact us so that we can arrange another briefing.
Individual Photos Mr Gyllenspetz, a very talented photographer, will be taking individual photos of the children next Friday. You will be offered the chance to purchase these for a very reasonable rate and any profit will go directly to the school as Mr G does not charge us for his work.
Pop-up Gardening Club At lunchtime, here at school, on Monday 14th October, at 12.30pm, we will be running a Pop Up Gardening Club – we will plant out bedding plants and bulbs and do some tidying up of the borders ahead of winter. Gardening is such an amazing skill for children to acquire and we hope that, by doing it at lunchtime, we may have lots of children opting to join us. However, we could do with more adult volunteers to help manage the project. If you are able to help out for half an hour in that lunch time, please let us know. Our aim is to continue with occasional Gardening Projects at lunchtimes to reach as many children as possible.
High Sheriff visit We had a visit from the High Sheriff of Wiltshire this week, and he told the children about his work, especially with charities that care for children. Our thanks to him for making the time to come into school and talk to us.
Reading and Maths afternoon for parents – Tuesday 15th October at 2.00pm. Please do come along to this event. Supporting your child at home is a really effective way to help them make good progress. The event comprises a workshop and a short classroom experience with your child.
Dangerous parking around school Once again, we are receiving huge numbers of complaints from parents and residents about very poor parking around the school at pick up and drop off times. The single biggest risk to our children comes from traffic. More school children die or are seriously injured in traffic accidents than any other cause in the UK.
If there is not enough space to park safely at this end of the village, please park further down in the village and walk up beautiful Green Lane. It will take a few minutes longer and keep your child safe. Please consider lift clubs to reduce the number of cars coming into our area. Please do NOT park in the staff car park, or at the entrance to staff car park. Children who are walking up Green Lane into school are put at risk with this dangerous driving and parking, and our staff often struggle to have safe access to their workplace because of inconsiderate parking by parents and carers.
Please remember the Stop and Drop in our layby so that children can get out of their cars safely and come into school without parents having to leave their vehicles. This eases congestion if used correctly.
Secondary School – If your child is transferring to secondary school in September 2020 then apply for a place online at www.wiltshire.gov.uk. The deadline is midnight on 31 October 2019.
Collective Worship This week, we reflected on how abundantly we are provided for in this amazing world of ours, and how we find our happiness not in lots of possessions but rather in other things – family and friends, sunsets and seasons, running and laughing, water and wood, reaching out to others ….. things that cost little but bring great joy and contentment. Children had a look at some of Andy Goldsworthy’s art and have been making pictures and structures of their own in a similar style on the school field and playground during their playtimes.
E-Safety Karl Hopwood, who is an online safety expert, will be here at our school on Monday 21st October at 5.00pm to deliver a presentation on what you can do to help your child stay safe online. Please do put this date in your diary and try to have at least one representative from your family attend this event.
