Newsletter 24 – 22nd March 2019

Dear Parents

Pilgrimage Day We had a wonderful day of reflection, activities and celebration at Edington Priory church on Tuesday. This annual event is a day of spiritual growth for all, whether people of faith or not. This year, using the theme of Easter, children and adults were able to spend time thinking about their priorities, their inspirations, their philosophy and their approach to life. We ended with a lovely celebration, joining together the local parishes and our school for this great project. Our thanks to all the staff and all the congregations and clergy of our surrounding parishes who worked so hard to make this day a success.

Charity Afternoon We are delighted to have been able to give a stall to every group who applied for one, to raise funds for a charity of their choice. The applications were thoughtful and carefully presented. Each group will now prepare a very short presentation on the charity of their choice (no more than 2 minutes in total) to give to the school before the Charity afternoon on Tuesday 2nd April. Each group has been notified of the date for their presentation.  Preparations for the afternoon are already underway!

Dragon Dress-Up Day Children in Sarum class are invited to come to school on Tuesday 26th March in “Dragon” themed costumes, ready for a day of fun on the theme. Parents have also been invited to come at 1.30pm to enjoy some of the work the children have done on this theme.

Outreach from Dauntsey’s KS2 children enjoyed a performance of “Danny, Champion of the World” at Dauntsey’s secondary school on Monday. We also have regular sports coaching for our older children through the Dauntsey’s outreach, and our Year 6 children complete a little D&T project in their workshops each summer. We are always grateful for the enrichment of our provision that we gain from this link with Dauntsey’s.

Last day of term   Friday 5th April is the last day of this term and we all return to school on Tuesday 23rd April.

Change of date for Year 6 Leavers’ Trip to Cathedral Please note that the date for the Cathedral trip for Year 6 Leavers has been changed to Tuesday 2nd July.

Thank you We have really enjoyed seeing more parents taking part in the Wake and Shake routines that our Year 6 children choreograph in their spare time. Thank you for having a go!

Homework There is an expectation that children will spend about 20 minutes each evening doing homework. This will include reading and discussing their book with you, learning spellings, times tables and number bonds, and once a week completing a written homework exercise. If your child will not do their homework calmly and willingly, just write a note to that effect in the homework book and send them into school with the homework not done. We do not want homework to become a huge issue in the home. We will deal with the matter here at school and children will have playtime detentions if their homework is not complete. It should be the responsibility of the child to do the work.

There are three main reasons we set homework: first is to ensure that children get a bit more practice at various aspects of the curriculum, second is to give parents a little glimpse into the work their children are doing at school and third is to help children develop the independence, discipline and resilience that they need to tackle the challenges of education and work in later life.

Parking in Witchcombe Close Once again, we have had complaints from the residents of Witchcombe Close about cars belonging to parents in our school. Please remember that this is a private road, no one ought to be driving along it, turning in it or parking in it unless they are one of the residents responsible for its upkeep. The residents have been advised to take a photo of the registration of the cars involved and send them to the police.

Erlestoke Junior Cricket at The Walled Garden Throughout the summer of 2019, Erlestoke & Coulston CC will be reviving the junior section of the club. They offer fun and all-inclusive cricket coaching for boys and girls aged 5-11 and welcome all abilities and experiences. Each session costs £2, and all equipment and refreshments are provided. The first session will be on the 27th April, 10.00am – 11.00am, so please drop them an email if you or your children are interested.
