Newsletter 19 – 8th February 2019

Dear Parents

Next Friday, 15th February, is the last day of this half term.

Science afternoon What a wonderful afternoon we had on Tuesday, when children in Sarum class and their parents were given the opportunity to take part in a carousel of science experiments together! Children could try invisible writing, estimate their lung capacity, make their own compasses that show North, experiment with magnets, and so much more. Thanks to Mrs Goddard and Mrs Jones who organised the event so efficiently and to Mrs Hayward who stayed on after school to help. And thanks to all the parents and carers who came to enjoy this event. Working in partnership with the school is one of the best ways to ensure your children have an outstanding education.

Fire Safety We were grateful to the fire service who came to our school to remind our children how they must react to keep safe in the unlikely event of a fire. They reminded us that we should all have evacuation plans to leave our homes should the usual exits be blocked by fire. And children were warned about the dangers of playing with fire.

Snow day We do not like to close our school for snow but last Friday the safety of our children and of our staff who have a long or complex commute into school was at risk due to the snow. Thank you all for your understanding.  It was lovely to hear how many children and their families made the most of the day and spent it outdoors enjoying the fun of the snow. So much better than sitting at home watching a screen!

Review of school values It is always good for us to take time every so often to reflect on the foundation of our school, the Christian ethos and the school values. Our governors, staff and children are busy with this at the moment. We welcome parental input into this work and ask you to respond with any comments you would like to make about the school values and how they impact on your child and their education. We welcome positive comments as well as points for improvement. Our values are Aspiration, Courage, Compassion and Joy. These are the foundation on which we build all our work. You can phone in, email in, write a note or pop into the office to give us your views on this.

Paper Free Newsletters We are going to move to a paper free system for newsletters in the new half term. We will make sure that there are few “hard copies” available at the office, but, since nearly everyone receives the newsletter electronically, and it is always available on the school website, it makes sense to reduce our paper and ink consumption through this measure. If you would prefer to continue to receive a paper copy of the newsletter, please let us know and we will make sure that your child is given one on Friday afternoons.

Christmas Performance Donations Half of the money raised at the Christmas Performances is always given to charity. This year, the children have decided that they will donate the money to the WWF https://www.wwf.org.uk/ and to the Mathieson Music Trust http://www.mathiesonmusictrust.org.uk/ . These two charities embody the concern our children have for our environment and for children less fortunate than they are. It is heart-warming to see how outward looking they are, and how much they understand their responsibilities as citizens of our world.

Parking Residents of homes across the road from our school and in Witchcombe Close have been advised to take photos of cars that block their driveways or park dangerously and send these photos in to the police. Please make sure that you do nothing to annoy our neighbours or jeopardise the safety of our children. There is parking further down in the village and you can walk along Green Lane, enjoying a chat with your child as you come to and from school along this very pretty lane.

Easter Flower Festival at St Peter’s Church in Great Cheverell will take place over the Easter weekend (Sunday 21st April – Monday 22nd April). If you would like to do a flower arrangement for this festival, on the theme “All flowers that on Earth do spring”, please contact Mrs Roberts-Phare on arobertsphare@gmail.com and let her know. Our children will be presenting art work for the festival.
