Visit to Hindu Temple All our children and all our staff will be going in a coach to the Hindu temple in Swindon next week on Wednesday 10th October. Children need to wear school uniform. There will be no hot dinners on this day so please make sure you have sent in a packed lunch or ordered sandwiches from Lataca. We will be back before the end of the school day. Ukulele club will run as normal from 3-4pm.
Harvest Thank you to everyone who contributed to our collection for the Devizes Food Bank. The response has been amazing and your contributions will help to care for families suddenly in crisis. Thank you also to the PFA for the wonderful display in sharing assembly.
Reading Workshop Our thanks to all the parents and carers who came along to this workshop. A list of questions that might help with inference and deduction skills is available if you were not able to get to the workshop. We want children to enjoy reading. That is the key. They do not have to read books, if they don’t wish to. They can read instructions on how to build models, or play a computer game, they can read articles and blogs on the internet (with your supervision), they can read comics, road signs, captions, cereal boxes, name tags – absolutely anything. Put notes up in the garden, on mirrors, on their bedroom walls. Have quizzes, family joke books, or lists. It is all reading!
Please continue to read with your older children. It is always a delight to us to hear of parents who still read to their 11 year olds – often using wonderful classics which are so superb when read out loud and which present such deep and powerful vocabulary and imagery. Alice in Wonderland, The Wind in the Willows, The Railway Children, Black Beauty, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Secret Garden, The Children of the New Forest, Sherlock Homes, and abridged versions of Charles Dickens or Shakespeare works, as well as more modern works such as Gerald Durrell’s animal books, Roald Dahl’s books, To Kill a Mocking Bird, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Charlotte’s Web. Children who listen to good reading and enjoy reading do better at GCSE, at A levels and at work in later life.
Supervision of children after school Please make sure that your child is close to you and under your direct supervision when they have been released into your care after school. We cannot have children running around unsupervised on the school property – this is when accidents can happen.
PFA Our thanks to the outgoing Chair and her team, Mrs Annabel Mackintosh – what a great job they have done over the past year! We welcome our new team and look forward to another great year of fun and fundraising. Our new chair and vice chair are Lisa Downing and Julie Stone. Please do consider offering to help the PFA if you can – even just an hour here and there would be much appreciated.
Art Exhibition of Children’s Work On Friday 19th October, we invite all parents to come to our Art Exhibition, which will be held in our school hall and will run from 1.45pm – 2.45pm. This will be held instead of our usual Sharing Assembly. At this exhibition you will be able to enjoy some wonderful art done by the children and inspired by their work on our topic of David Hockney. We are very grateful to the Salisbury Museum team who have worked so hard with us this term and have helped put this exhibition together and to all our other volunteers who have supported so strongly, especially Mrs Jelf who spent time with each class in the art centre.
Holiday Club Our holiday club providers, SuperStars, have offered to run holiday club activities at our school through part of the October half term break. The club will run from Monday 29th October to Friday 2nd November. Forms are available at the office or you can book online through their website,
https://bookings.super-stars.org.uk/ . Children love this club and we always have very positive reports about their activities.
Absence from Afterschool Clubs Once your child has signed up for an afterschool club, it is absolutely essential that you let us know if they are not going to attend. Otherwise we spend a lot of time trying to find them, thinking that they are still on site and ought to be at the club. Please note there will be no Judo next week – October 11th.
Thanks to volunteer parents We have many parents who volunteer in our school and we are so grateful for all they do – those who run or help with Gardening Club, those who hear readers, those who help with art and design projects and so many more. Our very sincere thanks to you all.
Secondary School places Our year 6 children will start secondary school in September 2019. The deadline for applying for a place is the 31 October 2018. Please register at https://admissions.wiltshire.gov.uk/prefs.php
Epipens Please be aware that there is an international shortage of Epipens and the government has given notification that some Epipens can be used for 4 months after their expiry date to help ensure that no vulnerable child is left in danger. Please check with your pharmacist to find out whether your Epipen is one of those that can be used beyond its expiry date.
