Newsletter 29 – 25th May 2018

This is the last day of this half term – we wish all our families a relaxing and wonderful half term break. Everyone is back at school on Tuesday 5th June.

Forest of Dean Our very sincere thanks to Mr Amor, Mr Gyllenspetz, Mrs Edwards and Mrs Trusler who organised and accompanied the residential trip to the Forest of Dean. It is an enormous responsibility for our staff to undertake this trip each year and we are very grateful for their commitment to the children.

Music concert We are so proud of our talented young musicians – they provided us with a wonderful evening’s entertainment of rich and beautifully performed music. My especial thanks to Mrs Edwards, Mr Gundry, Mrs Heath, Mrs Jenkins and Mr Lazarus for all the work they do in our school to promote wonderful music.

Leading Collective Worship Forty of our children have volunteered to lead collective worship through the summer term. To do this, they have to have a team which works well together, they have to decide on a theme (usually something to do with one of the school values) and a Bible story that underpins the theme. They have to rehearse the presentation to ensure that it is engaging for their peers. We are very proud of our Y6 Collective Worship leaders who take responsibility for helping the younger children with their preparations for leading worship. Parents are welcome to attend collective worship which takes place at 10.00am every day except Friday (when we have Sharing instead at 2.15pm).

Warm weather Please send your children into school with water bottles and sun hats as the weather warms up. They should have sunscreen applied before they leave home. This is a good opportunity to check that all items of clothing have your child’s name written in them as well – the lost property basket is overflowing!

Secondary Schools As Year 5 parents start to consider which secondary school would best suit their child, there are opportunities being presented to look around our very good local schools. We are in the fortunate position of having all local secondary schools judged “Good” by Ofsted, which gives parents a wide choice of really good provision. The following schools have Year 5 Taster Days coming up in the last half term:

Lavington Secondary School: 26th June 2018   (01380 812352 to book a place)

Matravers Secondary School: 17th July 2018    (01373 82266 to book a place)

Matravers also runs some great “Stretch and Challenge” days for Year 5 children throughout the year which sound very exciting – they take place after school. The new 6th form provision which runs from Lavington School is in fact a satellite of the Matravers 6th form college so there are good links between the two schools.

Parking again We have been asked very politely by residents of Witchcombe Close not to park on their grass verges – theirs is a private road, and damage done by your cars has to be paid for by the residents themselves. We ask you most urgently to park courteously and safely.

Piano Lessons These start again in the week commencing 11th June. Please note that this is a change from what was previously advertised.

Performances by children taking music lessons outside of school Everyone who has applied for a place at our music event on Tuesday 12th June at 10.45am has been given a place in the programme. Please make sure your child has been well prepared for this. Parents/carers are welcome to attend the performance which will probably last no longer than 20 minutes or half an hour.

Tuesday Summer Sports Club Please note – there will be no summer sports club after the half term.
