Sarum Class Living Rainforest Visit Please remember that on Wednesday 31st January, children in Sarum class will be having their trip to the Living Rainforest. Please make sure that they are at school promptly at 8.20am – the coach will not wait for latecomers and they leave at 8.30am – and that they have a packed lunch. Children must wear their uniform.
School Council We have many ways of canvassing our children’s opinion of their experience at school and one of these is via the school council. The children elect councillors from their peers in each class, and I meet with these councillors to discuss matters of importance to the children. We do all we can to action suggestions put forward – we know that happy children are great learners and we want them to enjoy their time at primary school. Whilst we have occasional suggestions that are not within the realms of possibility (a school trip to Disney Land was a recent suggestion!), most ideas are very sensible, well thought out and will benefit children. The recent council meeting included some great suggestions for improving Collective Worship, a suggestion for a much longer path around the school field (to establish a Daily Kilometer circuit), a suggestion for an obstacle course, a comment about refurbishing the Pirate Ship and getting some new equipment for the outdoor classroom. It is always a delight to see how responsible and thoughtful our children are when they work on these projects.
Police visit There was a tremendous amount of excitement about the visit of our local policeman, Sam Burnside, to our school on Tuesday. He chatted to the children and let them explore his police car – including the siren! We are very grateful for this outreach into the community by the police.
Free Time for Children A recent study has shown that children often work longer hours than their parents, once their school time, homework, clubs and other organised activities and duties are taken into account. There is a recommendation that children have between three and four hours a day of “Down time” with no clubs or organised activities and no television or iPads or other electronic devices – time when they have to entertain themselves and even when they might start out being bored. During this time, they do essential learning and consolidate all that they have absorbed in the day and they develop the creativity and independence that will be of such great help later in life. It might be interesting for parents to calculate how much time in each day their child has to play freely – outdoors, or with friends, with lego, with cardboard boxes and blankets or with other simple resources that they can use imaginatively.
Maths Calculations If you are not able to come to our workshop afternoon on Tuesday 6th February at 2.30pm when teachers will be showing parents how we carry out the four operations in the new curriculum, please have a look at the following links for more information on the maths national curriculum requirements. (We emphasise that we will be teaching your child the formal written methods – the workshop is only for interest and for occasional homework projects. The best thing you can do to help your child’s maths is to ensure that they know their times tables and number bonds and that they can enjoy using maths in their daily lives by baking with them, letting them use money, measuring things, etc.)
Icy Paths We aim to put grit down on the path that leads from the pedestrian gate to the school – in very icy conditions, please keep to this gritted walkway since the rest of the playground and the field paths are treacherously slippery in icy weather.
Health and Safety We ask that you do not walk along the grass border on the margin of Silbury and Avebury classroom where there is no path and the slope is steep – accidents can happen! Rather take the steps up onto the hill, walk along the path and then take the steps down the other side.
Parent/Teacher Meetings You will be invited to meet with your child’s class teacher to discuss their progress in March. These meetings will take place on Wednesday 14th March from 3.10pm – 6.00pm, and on Thursday 15th March from 5.30pm – 8.00pm. As usual, we shall open the parents’ booking site in the fortnight before the meetings so that you can book a time slot that suits you. Each meeting will last 10 minutes. You are always welcome to make an appointment to discuss your child’s progress at any time but these formal meetings provide a good opportunity to check on attainment, progress and targets that have been set since the last summative assessments.
