Dear Parents

Harvest Thank you to everyone who contributed to our collection for the Devizes Food Bank. The response has been amazing and your contributions will help to care for families suddenly in crisis. Thank you also to the PFA for the wonderful display in sharing assembly.

Braeside If your child is going on the residential trip for children in Year 3 and Year 4, please ensure that you have completed a medical form for any medication they need to take (prescription medication only) and notify us of any allergies or food intolerances they may have.

Piano Lessons We are delighted to be able to offer piano lessons for children in our school with peripatetic teacher, Robert Broomfield BA First Class, MISM. Holiday Club In a change from previous years, our holiday club providers, SuperStars, have offered to run holiday club activities at our school through the October half term break in addition to their other weeks. The Club will run through the whole half term, from Thursday 19th October to Friday 27th October.  Forms are available at the office or you can book online through their website, https://bookings.super-stars.org.uk/

Illness in school At this time of the year, we often have lots of cases of colds, flu and tummy upsets. Children can come into school if they are slightly unwell with a bit of a runny nose, but no child should come to school with a temperature and if your child has had vomiting or diarrhoea, they must not come back into school for 24 – 48 hours after their last episode. We rely on parents making that final judgement about precisely when to come back to school, but they should not be rushed back into school within hours. We need to ensure that we keep the infection under control and this is best done by making sure that infectious children are not at school.  We remind children about, and rehearse, hand washing protocols, every child has their own pen and pencil and we are strict in hygiene observance in all areas of school life, aiming to keep contamination to an absolute minimum.

Stop and Drop Please remember that, at drop off times, the layby outside the school is kept free from parked cars and used by parents as a Drop Off and Drive area – where you pull in and let your child jump out, check that they get through the school gates, and then drive away. This is not be a suitable strategy for our youngest children of course, but is perfectly safe for the older children. It is one way to minimise the traffic congestion and dangerous parking that causes such a hazard to our children. Please remember – we ask that you do not park in the layby. Stop there, drop off and drive away once you have seen that your child is safely inside the school gates.

Secondary School places our year 6 children will start secondary school in September 2018. The deadline for applying for a place is the 31 October 2017. Please register at https://admissions.wiltshire.gov.uk/prefs.php

Policies Each year at this time I like to summarise in the newsletter some of our most relevant policies and procedures, so that parents are familiar with them. This week, we will discuss briefly the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) Policy.

For children who have a significant learning difficulty or disability, we will provide education that is additional to, or otherwise different from, the educational provision made generally for children of this age. We work closely with parents and with outside agencies such as Educational Psychologists, Behavioural Support Therapists and Speech and Language therapists to ensure best outcomes for children with SEND. There are clear indicator documents to guide the school in the decision about whether a child ought to be receiving this extra provision. Our policy and information on SEND can be accessed at http://holy-trinity.co.uk/policies-2/ . In short, what will happen is that any child about whom the teacher has concerns will be raised at an SEN meeting with the SENCO (Special Educational Need Co-ordinators) and monitored closely. If the child is not making progress, they will be assessed and given whatever SEND support is deemed necessary through a support plan, drawn up with the teacher, parents, child and SENCO. If the child still does not make progress, they will be assessed further and might be given an Education, Health and Care Plan which might draw down some extra funding. Parents can help to decide what this extra funding ought to be used for.

Overall in our school, our children with SEND make very good progress even if their attainment is low. Mrs Goddard is our SENCO. It is worth remarking that children who are struggling but do not meet the thresholds for SEND Support are also given lots of extra support in this school if they require it. We open what we call a “Concern Sheet” which is shared with parents and extra provision is put in place for the child to ensure their best outcomes. Many children have a concern sheet at some point in their school lives – often just for a half term or so until they have overcome the problem that caused the concern.

PFA News

Hard to believe the Outdoor Cinema was only last Friday! We’ve done a big shout-out on the PFA Facebook page to individuals who helped make the evening so magical – including all of you who came to the event, the children who presented their incredible cardboard car creations and those of you who baked cakes and treats for us to sell on the night. Again, a big thank-you for all your support!

On a more nostalgic note, this is our last newsletter post as the current PFA core team. At today’s AGM, myself, Debi Bell-Hosking (Chair), Louise Gaiger (Vice-Chair), Julie Stone (Vice-Chair) and Poppy Godfrey (Secretary) will be stepping down from our named roles after what has been a truly fun and super year working together – and we genuinely look forward to supporting the new team and lending a helping hand.

We’re proud to have presented the school with £2000 towards the children’s ‘food & cookery’ classes in the face of budget cuts, to have paid £500 towards the Stomp performance earlier this year and we’ve just given the school £200 to update the children’s play time dressing up box – maybe with some space suits!

We’ve also discussed that the school approach the PFA on an ad hoc basis to fund more special events, performances and visitors to the school as this is something that is likely to suffer under the strain of recent budget cuts.

The ‘look-ahead’ for the next team is really positive, There is a healthy amount in the  pot and many people have already expressed interest in running individual events throughout the year. Similarly, some Mums have come forward to say they’d like to form a team of pairs to keep ‘Jane’s Tuck Shop’ going. So it’s full steam ahead….!

At time of writing we do not know who the new team is, apart from Kevin Cleveley who will be taking on the role as Treasurer, but we wish them every success and a lot of fun and laughter in the process!
