Newsletter 33 – 10th June 2016

Dear Parents

Outdoor Classroom We are all delighted with the outdoor classroom that was completed during the half term break – what a great structure it is, and what fun the children will have in it! We are extremely grateful to our wonderful PFA who worked so hard to raise the funds for this, and to all of you who contributed so generously to this project. Please feel free to walk across the field and have a look at it and do make time to come to the Grand Opening of the outdoor classroom which will take place on Friday 24th June, in place of Sharing Assembly. The Celebration will start at 2.15pm, with some music performances from the new outdoor classroom, and then we will have a formal ribbon cutting by our Year 6 children. After that, you are all invited to bring along a picnic and spend the afternoon here, enjoying children’s entertainment and summer fair stalls, provided by our PFA, from 3.00pm – 5.00pm.

Residential Trips   Children in Years 5 and 6 had a wonderful time at the Forest of Dean at the end of last half term. They took part in lots of adventure activities and learnt a lot about independence, resilience and courage, as well as friendship and team building. My thanks to Mr Amor, Mr Gyllenspetz and Mrs Edwards who organised this trip and to Mrs Andrew, Mrs Trusler and Mr Mehaffy who so kindly offered to accompany the trip as well. It is a huge responsibility and very exhausting for the staff, and we are very grateful for their commitment to our children.

NSPCC workshop for children On Thursday 30th June, the NSPCC will be running workshops calledSpeak Out. Stay Safe” for each class to help the children understand how to stay safe and how to report to trusted adults anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. The workshops are run with great sensitivity and awareness of the innocence of children, and are delivered at an age appropriate level. We are very grateful for this initiative. Parents are invited to school on Thursday 23rd June at 8.45am to have a presentation by the NSPCC on the programme. If you do not wish your child to attend this workshop, please let us know in writing.

New Forest and Mosque trip We will be taking the whole school to visit a mosque in Southampton and then spending the rest of the day in the New Forest, enjoying activity sessions about the plants and animals of the New Forest, on Tuesday 12th July. This will be a great way for children to enjoy our beautiful and diverse country just before the end of term. Children will be back at school by about 4.00pm – a later end than a usual school day.

Cricket Tournament Mr Gyllenspetz will be taking his cricket team (which he has been coaching all year) to an interschool tournament on Wednesday 15th June. We wish them well – they are a very talented team, this year.

Steam Museum A reminder that Avebury class is going to the Steam Museum on Wednesday 22nd June – please make sure your child brings a packed lunch.

French Concert Our very popular French concert will take place on Monday 27th June at 10.45am. My thanks to Mrs Twentyman who works very hard to ensure the success of this event.

Silbury Class restaurant Parents of children in Silbury class will be invited to the Titanic Themed Restaurant on Tuesday 28th June – this is a much loved event each year, with parents dressing up beautifully and children preparing and serving wonderful dishes.

Netball coaching at St Joseph’s for the netball club. Please leave school promptly so that the session can begin at St Joseph’s school as soon as possible. Letters have gone home earlier in the week.

Stonehenge Class Craft Open Afternoon Parents of children in Stonehenge class are invited to come into school on Monday 4th July to have fun with their children doing some craft activities.

Midsummer Night’s Dream We are delighted with the preparations for our first performance of a play by Shakespeare! The children in Year 3 and 4 are working hard on their lines, and early signs are that this is going to be a tremendous production with the children really doing their best to ensure an outstanding experience for the audience. My sincere thanks to Mrs Jones who did a huge amount of work adapting the play for our children and to both Mrs Jones and Mrs Goddard for all the work they are putting into this production. Parents will soon be offered tickets for the performances on Thursday 7th July – a performance at 1.30pm and another at 5.00pm.

Sports Day A reminder that our sports day takes place on Wednesday 13th July at 9.15. It will finish at about midday and you are all invited to bring a picnic along and have lunch with your child on the field. The bell will ring at 1.00pm as usual and children will have afternoon school as usual.

Trophies If you won a trophy at our prize giving last year, or if you know of anyone else who won one, please arrange for them to be returned to the office so that we can have them engraved with this year’s prize winners. These prizes will be awarded in the final Leavers’ Assembly at the end of the summer term. There are academic awards, as well as awards for swimming, art/drama, fellowship and citizenship.
