Newsletter 36 – 3rd July 2015

Dear Parents

Reports Written reports on your child’s progress and attainment have been uploaded onto the Parent Portal under documents – please log in to access the report. The Parent Portal is available via a link on the school website. If you would like to discuss anything about the report with your child’s teacher, please contact the school by phone, email or in person to arrange a mutually convenient time for this appointment.

Shakespeare Day On Thursday 9th July, we are having a whole day devoted to a Shakespeare production. Each class will have a workshop with a professional actor/director, each class will make scenery and props and will rehearse their part in the play and at about 2.15pm they will perform excerpts from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Parents are welcome to attend this performance. Children should wear black or very dark clothing on this day, so that they can be cast as any character. (School trousers or skirts in a dark colour and a dark T shirt will be fine).

Leavers’ trip to the Cathedral. The Year 6 children had a great trip to Salisbury Cathedral for the joint Diocesan Leavers’ service. They met other Year 6 children from all over the Diocese, had fun with some workshops and took part in a child centred service in the cathedral. This is always a moving service and a bittersweet moment as we prepare to say good bye to these children whom we have nurtured for up to seven years.

French Concert My thanks to Mrs Twentyman and to all our children for entertaining us so well on Wednesday – the French concert is always fun and we laugh a lot! It is impressive to see the French that our children have learnt in the course of the year. Thanks also to parents for coming along to support this event.

Sports Day We will have our annual sports day on Wednesday 8th July, starting at about 9.15. The sports themselves are finished by about 12.00pm and all parents are invited to bring along a picnic lunch and share this with their child on the school field. The bell will ring at 1.00pm as usual and the children will return to their classrooms for afternoon school.

Sports day is a hotly contested competition in our school – as part of our aspirational values, we expect children to try to win and to accept both victory and defeat graciously. In addition to the points won on sports day itself, we add in points accumulated for each team through the course of the year for other events such as the swimming galas, pancake races, class sports events and many others. So, as well as a sports day winning team, there will be an overall winner for the year, as well as winners for the different phases of the school.

Silbury Class Orchestra On Friday 10th July, Silbury Class Orchestra will be performing in sharing assembly – it is a very impressive performance. Do come along and enjoy it.

School Eucharist On Tuesday 7th July, the Bishop of Salisbury will be coming to our school to celebrate the annual school Eucharist. You are all most welcome to attend this lovely event. The children participate in the singing, the dancing, readings and prayers, and it is always a moving and reflective experience.

Transition work Some of our Year 5 children attended Lavington for a taster session this week, and I was invited to attend the Sports Day at Old School Nursery – a tremendous event! What great organisation and sportsmanship I saw there, with the youngest children. Some our Year 6 children who will be attending schools other than Lavington also had their induction days last week.

For interest, you may like to know that 11 of our Year 6 children are transferring to Lavington school this year, 3 to Dauntsey’s, 3 to St Augustine’s, 1 to Bishop Wordsworth Grammar school and 1 to Christ’s Hospital.

Term time and holiday time 2015 – 2016 Please find attached the term dates for the coming academic year. The TD dates have also been announced in this newsletter. Please note that we do not authorise any holidays outside of these dates unless there are really exceptional circumstances (a parent back from active service for a short break, or a close family member very ill).

Music Holiday Club   Our brass instrument and ukulele tutor is going to run a music holiday club from Monday 27th July to Thursday 30th July. Mr Gundry is a very talented musician and always makes sure the children have great fun, making music, making instruments and enjoying visiting musicians’ performances. Sign up forms for this holiday club have been sent home.

Sports Holiday Club Superstars will be running our sports holiday club in the week commencing Monday 3rd August and Monday 17th August. Again, this club is always very popular. You can sign up on-line. A letter went out about this last week.

A massive thank you to those who helped, supported and made the summer fayre such a success. We made just under £1000 which will go towards funding some fun for the children next year. Watch this space.

Lost Property we have a key in the office which was handed in recently – it looks like a door key, have you lost one?

The school lost property is overflowing in the library area and will be thrown out over the summer holidays so please take whatever is yours.
