Newsletter 23 – 13th March 2015

Dear Parents

Last day of this term is Friday 27th March. We all return to school on Monday 13th April.

Midday Supervisory Assistant (MDSA)  We would like to appoint another MDSA to work with our wonderful children during their lunchtimes on a Friday where a vacancy has arisen. We need someone who has experience of working with children, knows how to make lunch times fun whilst at the same time keeping clear boundaries in place and setting high expectations for good behaviour. The rate of pay starts at £7.11 per hour (Wiltshire Pay Grade B, points 7 – 9)  and the contract would be for an hour and a quarter each week. Please ask at the office for an application form if you are interested in this post.  The offer of the post will be conditional on checks, including the DBS checks, being satisfactory. References will be sought. Closing date for applications is Friday 27th March.

Parent/Teacher Meetings  Thank you to all who attended these meetings. Your children do well in this school because of the great partnership between home and school – thank you for being such engaged and supportive parents. Please remember that you are most welcome to make an appointment with your child’s teacher to discuss their achievement at any time – not just at these formal meetings.  You are also free to send in emails, write notes in the homework books, phone in or, for a very quick word, catch the teachers after school if you need to tell us anything.

Mothering Sunday

Sunday 15th March at 11.00am

Everyone is invited to come to the Art Centre here at our school to celebrate Mothering Sunday. Flowers will be given out to all mothers, there will be activities including playdough, singing and a Thank You game, and there will be tea and coffee at the end. Rev James Campbell will be leading the service. It would be lovely to have lots of children and their mothers at this service.

Superchoir  Thank you to all who signed up for the Superchoir! We have had a tremendous response to this great project and we are delighted that our children are so enthusiastic about singing in a massed choir with hundreds of other junior children from surrounding schools. Rehearsals will take place at lunchtimes on Thursdays. My very sincere thanks to Ms Sharman who has led strongly on this project and will be working hard to ensure our children do well and have fun.

Handbells The Boys’ Handbell Club will be performing on Friday 13th March, and the Girls’ Handbell Club will be performing on Friday 20th March at Sharing Assembly.

Recently at Sharing We all enjoyed hearing  the very moving choral performance of a lovely poem on the rain forest, given by our Year 3 choir on Friday. And it has been a great joy to hear the music making by all our young musicians over the past weeks. They perform so courageously and beautifully.

Forest School Day On Wednesday 18th March, all the children in Sarum class will be going on a Forest School day to experience some of the wildness and fun of the woodland.

Science Event at Lavington On Tuesday 17th March, some of our most talented Year 5 scientists will be going to Lavington School where they will work with children from other local primary schools on a science project – with an element of competition! This is a great way to foster links both with other primary schools and with our local secondary school. My thanks once again to Mrs Yates and Mrs Edwards who work so hard to ensure that the children are safe, and that transport and all the other administration tasks for off-site trips are completed so efficiently.

Stonehenge class Wake and Shake  For the week commencing 23rd March, the children in Stonehenge class will lead us in our morning Wake and Shake routine.  It is great to see the enthusiasm and energy they bring to this and the confidence it builds – to lead the whole school in their routine is a great achievement! My thanks also to their teacher, Miss Nisbeck and their TAs Mrs Kamei and Mrs Trusler who have made sure this has been such fun. Mrs Trusler was the choreographer!

Sharing Assembly We have been asked by a couple of parents to mention that it is difficult to hear the little voices of the children sharing their work if there are toddlers and babies making a noise in Sharing Assembly. We welcome everyone, of course, but if your young child is being noisy we would be grateful if you could stand in the hall foyer with them so that others can hear the children in the hall presenting their work.

Super Stars Holiday Club Holiday sports club will run from Tuesday 7th April to Friday 10th April this year and again from Monday 3rd August to Friday 7th August and from Monday 17th August to Friday 21st August. If you would like your child to attend, either for the whole week or for specific days or half days, please sign up at http://www.super-stars.org.uk/holiday-courses-1/ .

PFA News

With only a couple of weeks left until the end of term the PFA activity is steadily ramping up and we have lots of fun things planned.
Watch this space for Junior Bake off on the last day of term and Easter tea.
The Easter Disco Party will be held on Thursday 26th March! Keep an eye out for posters and communications in book bags!

As always any help that parents can offer us when we have these events is indispensable. We can’t do it without you. Please grab one of us in the playground or drop us an email.

Very excitingly we are going to be investing some of our funds in a new piece of play equipment for the school grounds, this has been in consultation with the School Council and Mrs Henning. This will be in the form of an African-esque hide or Lapa. Essentially this is a raised platform with a roof and will make a fabulous outside space for play and teaching as well as an environment for bugs and bird watching among many other things. As this is a school community project the PFA would like to invite any members of the school community to tender for the building of this structure. Please contact gemmaeackerman@hotmail.com by the 20th March where we can provide you with some more details.
