AGM of the PFA Many thanks to all who attended this meeting. The following people will be office bearers for the coming year: Perdy Bishop (Chair), Annabel Mackintosh (Vice-Chair), Gemma Ackerman (Secretary) and Mike Green (Treasurer). Many thanks to these people and to all who contribute so much to enriching the learning and experience of our children at school. I would also like to thank Annabel and her team who did such a great job last year – lots of funds were raised, great projects were undertaken and the children have benefited hugely from your work.
Art Project Thank you very much to all our children who did so well. The judges had a really difficult decision to make, and loved all the entries. However, they had to choose the best three in each year group, and the following were winners: Daisie, Leon, George E, Ethan, Matt, Owen K, Abi E, Jack F, Jack T, Grace B, Oliver, Sophie M, Sophie J, PhePhe, Suzanna, Arun, Nancy May and Elijah. Many other children were also given a commendation. Thank you to Great Cheverell Parish council who donated the prizes and who did the judging for this project.
School Dinners Thank you very much to all our parents who made a tremendous effort to ensure that as many children as possible signed up to Universal Infant Free School Meals on 2nd October. We had 93% of children claim their meals on this day! We are most grateful for this as it helps us fund the initiative through extra Government money rather than the school budget.
Harvest Assembly My very sincere thanks to all who sent in contributions for Harvest and especially to the PFA who worked hard to ensure that the display was beautifully arranged. We are very grateful for all their work on this and on so many other projects in school. The non-perishable foodstuff, and any money raised, will go to the Trussell Trust Foodbank in Devizes where a huge number of families are supported each week with food boxes – there is a surprisingly large number of families in desperate situations in our local area and it is good that we can reach out to support them. Perishable foodstuff will be donated to the soup kitchen run by the churches in Devizes.
Collecting Children If someone different from usual is collecting your child, we need to be notified about this in advance, and preferably in writing. We cannot release children to someone (even if we know them well) without written permission from the parents of the children involved, especially for children in the Infants. In an absolute emergency we will accept a phone call giving permission.
Pyjama Day Great fun to be in school in pyjamas! The money raised from this will also go to the Devizes Food Bank.
Birds of Prey Experience On Wednesday of next week, we will have a display of birds of prey at school. Children will be able to watch them close up and will find out more about various birds of prey. We like to provide these experiences for children to broaden and enrich their education at school and to encourage them to take even more interest in the world around them. Predator-Prey relationships form an important part of the Biology curriculum and our children are always interested in the conservation of animals in our country.
Emergency Closure We almost never close this school, but if we should have to, for some reason such as really bad conditions on the roads leading to the school in winter, you will receive a text message, a notice will be posted on our website, on Facebook and on the local radio stations. Always expect the school to remain open unless you hear otherwise.
Policies Each year at this time I like to summarise in the newsletter some of our most relevant policies and procedures, so that parents are familiar with them. I shall deal with one policy or procedure each week, starting next week. These will include Child Protection, Behaviour, Homework, SEN and various others. If there is any policy you would particularly like to have summarised, do let me know. All our formal, written policies are available to read online on our website.
Defibrillator We have a defibrillator in school now – thanks to Dave Wilmot who organised the machine and the training for this device. If you are in the area and realise that someone is in need of a defibrillator, please feel free to make use of this one if school is open.
Absence following a visit recently from our Educational Welfare Officer, and according to new guidelines, we are obliged to record all un-notified absences as ‘Unauthorised’ after two weeks if we have not received confirmation from parents of the cause. Please make sure you confirm in writing the reason for your child’s absence as soon as possible.
Secondary School places Application forms have gone home with our year 6 children to apply for their secondary school place – please note that the deadline is 31st October 2014.
Primary School places We have application forms in school for children who will be four years old before September 2015. The deadline for these applications is 15th January 2015.
