Newsletter 38 – 11th July 2014

Dear Parents

PFA  Our very sincere thanks to Annabel, Perdy and all the team who have worked so hard this year to ensure that the PFA events were tremendously well organised and were great fun for everyone. The Fun Evening last week was a huge success and lots of our “new” parents commented on the lovely atmosphere that we have here at our school. The PFA also organised the refreshments on Sports day – again ensuring that the children (and the adults) had a good time. The PFA has supported so many events and made so many purchases through the year and our children’s experience at school is hugely enriched because of their efforts. We are very fortunate to have such committed people engaged in this work.

Film and Ice Cream morning As a reward for their hard work, excellent behaviour through the year and care for school property, we will be giving our children a Film and Ice Cream morning on the last day of term. One of the films that the children have asked for is “Frozen” which is rated PG because of some mildly scary action and mild rude humour. If you would prefer that your child did not watch this film, please let us know. The other film they will be offered (we are running 2 screens!) will be “Despicable Me 2” which is a U rating. If your child cannot have an ice cream in a cone, please let us know.

Y6 Leavers’ Trip to the Cathedral On Tuesday, our Year 6 children took part in the Leavers’ event in Salisbury Cathedral. There were various activities in the morning and a short service in the afternoon – we had been selected to read the prayers for this service and our children did very well, as ever. They enjoy joining with all the other Year 6 groups in the diocese, meeting in our wonderful Cathedral for this last big Diocesan event as primary school children.

Sports day On Wednesday we had sports day, again a wonderful day. We are always so proud of our children – they show huge determination to win, but not at all costs and it is lovely to see them looking after each other, to see the older children guiding and caring for the younger children and to see the generosity of spirit whether they are winners or not. My very sincere thanks to Mr Amor who always works so hard to ensure that Sports day is efficiently run, and fun for everyone. Thanks to all the staff who helped the children practise and who supervised the event so effectively. Our Year 6 children this year were particularly praiseworthy – their sensitive and responsible approach to the jobs that needed doing was wonderful.

Avebury Art Event Parents of children in Avebury class came to the Art Centre on Wednesday to enjoy some carefully prepared refreshments and to view the children’s art project. The children were very knowledgeable about the painting, the techniques they had used and about Seurat, and they served their guests with great courtesy and efficiency – what a great afternoon! Thank you to Mr Gyllenspetz and to Mrs Heath and Mrs Andrew who worked hard to make sure this was a successful event.

Music Concert We are very proud of all our young musicians – what a lot of talent there is in this school! The children performed on recorders, handbells, guitars, ukuleles, keyboards and brass. The school choir performed beautifully as well. Every item was of a high standard – what confidence it takes to perform in front of an audience! My thanks to everyone involved with preparing the children for this event.

Life Education Bus All the children have had a session on the Life Ed bus this week – they have learnt about how to stay healthy and look after themselves, how to resist peer pressure and make friends. The older children have done work on substance abuse. They always enjoy this event – they especially enjoy the giraffe!

Music at Sharing Assembly next week If your child plays an instrument outside of school and has a piece that they can perform to a good standard, please let us know before Wednesday and they can perform in Sharing Assembly on Friday 18th July.

Trip to the Victory and Mary Rose Please return your slips as soon as possible so that we can confirm this trip.
