Art Centre I am delighted to be able to announce that yesterday the purchase of the Mobile Classroom on our site was completed – it now belongs to our school and can be used by our children. The plan is to use it for Art, Design and Technology, Music and other learning experiences that demand more space than our classrooms can provide. Projects can be left out to dry or to be worked on the following day without disrupting other learning in the school. We have decided to designate the classroom as “The Art Centre”.
In addition, the younger children will use the area each day for their small group phonics sessions which currently take place in all sorts of nooks and crannies around the school. To this end, we will be installing movable classroom dividers so that the space can be used as two separate, smaller rooms or one large area.
The introduction of Universal Infant Free School Meals has also been made manageable by the acquisition of this extra room – from September, children in Year 1 and the Foundation Stage will eat their meals in the Art Centre, which will double as an extra canteen for the lunch hour – there is a small kitchen in the centre which will operate as the servery.
We are very grateful to the Great Cheverell Parish Council who have entirely funded the purchase and installation of the interactive whiteboard in the Art Centre – a huge cost. Their generosity is quite remarkable and we are extremely grateful to them for such a significant donation which will enhance all the learning that takes place in there. We are most fortunate to belong to such a supportive community who value the work that is done here in their local school.
We are also extremely grateful to the Soap Box Derby committee who have donated a significant sum towards developing the outdoor area around the Art Centre into a Science garden – we are able to move forward with this project immediately as a result of their generosity.
In the new term, we will hold an open afternoon so that parents can come and look around the Art Centre once we have completed arrangements for using it effectively.
My very sincere thanks go to the Preschool committee, especially Mr Paul Ackerman, the Chairman, who with the support of his wife Gemma, has worked tirelessly towards this end. Winding up the affairs of the Preschool and managing the sale of the unit has been challenging – and for Paul and Gemma the work is voluntary. We are extremely grateful for all the hours they have put into this project and for their commitment to ensuring the best outcome. It has been a pleasure to work with them – I am sure they must be even more delighted than I am that this is now complete! They hope to have a little farewell party for all past pupils and staff of the Preschool in the summer term. More notification will follow on this event.
Small Chairs and Tables Following the rearrangement of the furniture in the Art Centre, we realise that there are a couple of small tables and chairs that will be surplus to requirements. These will be available after school on Monday if parents would like to take them for a donation to the pre-school farewell party mentioned above.
Mothering Day Service Do come along to a Mothering Day service at St Peter’s in Great Cheverell on this Sunday, at 11.00am. Children will do some readings, prayers and songs, and all mothers and grandmothers will receive a lovely plant.
Parent Support Group A suggestion has been made that a support group for parents and families going through very challenging times be set up. The group would offer peer to peer support and practical support where necessary. If you would like to find out more about becoming part of such a group, please complete the slip at the bottom of this letter.
Lataca The deadline for the colouring competition on the front of the menu is Tuesday 1st April – please submit your Easter Bunny posters by then. Lataca would also like to take this opportunity to remind parents to get their orders in for next term. All menus, specials and order forms are available on the website www.lataca.co.uk . Don’t forget there is a special Easter menu on Wednesday 2nd April!
PFA Our thanks go, once again, to Annabel Mackintosh and Perdy Bishop and their amazing team who have worked so hard this term to arrange fund raisers and other great activities for our children. The work of PFA enhances and enriches the children’s experience of school. This term, they arranged the Pancake races, the Easter Party, the Junior Bakeoff, the Sunshine dress down day and many other events. We are immensely grateful for their commitment to our children and the school.
School Choir Ms Sharman and Mr Whichello have very kindly agreed to run a school choir through the summer term. There are no auditions for this choir, which is open to any child in Y3 to Y6 who enjoys singing and who would like to sing in the school concert on July 10th. The choir practices will take place on Mondays after school from 3.00pm – 4.00pm. There will be 8 practices, from Monday April 28th to Monday 7th July (discounting holidays and TD days). There will be a charge of £1.50 for each session, making a total of £12, payable in advance. The choir will be singing pop songs old and new, blues, swing and traditional songs from England and Ireland. If your child would like to take part, please complete the slip at the bottom of last week’s newsletter.
NB Choir practices will continue after school on Mondays in the autumn term for those singing in the Devizes Eisteddfod. Details of this will follow in September.
Easter Fun Day Friday 4th April – If you would like to make a donation(maybe chocolate based) to the food hamper that we are putting together for the Easter Fun Day then please drop off items to school Weds 2nd April.
