Newsletter 31 – 24th May 2013

Dear Parents

Vivienne Pearce It was with great sadness that we learnt of the sudden death of Viv Pearce last Saturday. She has been a Midday Supervisory Assistant for many years in our school and was at work here until a couple of days before her death. Her children and her grandchildren have been, and are, pupils in our school and her husband was a Chair of Governors here. The contribution of this family and of Viv in particular to our school life has been enormous and we are going to miss her terribly. She was always wonderful with the children, calm, understanding and thoughtful. She would always work above and beyond the call of duty – she was one of the volunteers who came with us on our trip to London recently and looked after her group with all her usual tenderness. Our thoughts and prayers go to Amber and Avril and to all her family at this time of great grief.

The funeral will be held on Thursday 30th May at 10.30am at St Peter’s Church in Great Cheverell. After the funeral, you are welcome to join the family at the homes of Avril and Amber in Garston.

Last day of this half term is today and we come back to school on Wednesday 5th June. Holiday Club will run from Tuesday 28th May to Friday 31st May. I believe there are a few spaces in some sessions – so if you want to come along on the day, please do so.

Forest of Dean Our Year 5 and Year 6 children have enjoyed a great trip, with climbing, caving, zip wire, canoeing and many more adventure activities. Great learning took place, especially on resilience, courage, teamwork and independence. My thanks to Mr Amor and Mr Gyllenspetz who planned and organised this trip, Mrs Andrew and Mrs Edwards who accompanied the children and the admin staff who work so hard to ensure that all the administration around these trips is completed efficiently.

Life Education Bus The Life Education Bus came to school this week and the children had the opportunity to explore various themes to do with staying healthy, resisting peer pressure, becoming independent and other similar topics.

Traffic and children’s safety Governors have asked me to let you know that the Highways department of our local authority has come out to investigate the situation of our school with regard to improving the signage and putting up an orange flashing light for use at drop off and pick up times. However, their investigation showed that our signs are well placed and compliant with all safety advice and so they have no plans to do any more for our school. Once again, we do ask you all to be vigilant for children, to park safely, not to double park and not to park in front of the intersection or on the bend. We also ask parents to keep children under very strict supervision when on the roadside.

Improvements to the school As well as the new field path, which will be completed during and just after the half term break, we also now have a lovely little garden area with a small pond in the small playground. My thanks to Mrs Abbott, Miss Nisbeck, Mrs Kamei and the little ones who have worked so hard to make the area beautiful and productive. Do go around there and have a look.
