Newsletter 30 – 17th May 2013

Dear Parents

Last day of this half term is Friday 24th May and we come back to school on Wednesday 5th June. Holiday Club will run from Tuesday 28th May to Friday 31st May.

New Chair of Governors I am delighted to announce that our Governing Body elected a new Chair and Vice Chair to the Board this week – Mr David Graham-Wheeler is now the Chair of our Board of Governors, and Mr Jeremy Shatford is our new Vice Chair. Congratulations to you both – how lucky we are to have such a depth of talent on our Governing Body. We are always very grateful for the huge commitment our governors make to the school and for taking on this great responsibility so generously. Their role is to develop the long term strategy for our academy, to set the policy for the academy, to ensure that the Christian Ethos is upheld and is at the heart of everything we do here, to ensure that the finances are well managed and to be a critical friend to the managers of the school so that children receive the best possible education. A list of governors is available on our website under the “Governance” tab.

Assessments Well done to all the children who wrote assessments appropriate for their age this week. They showed great resilience and enjoyment as they explored their learning outcomes through these assessments and we are very proud of them all. I would like to mark out the Year 6 children particularly, as they sat their final and statutory tests for KS2. They were patient, courageous and resilient, showing humour and enjoyment through the whole week. They can now look forward to a wonderful summer term where they can once again pick up their learning in the arts, D&T, Geography, History and many other aspects which have been on hold for the past few weeks as they have prepared for these tests.

Forest of Dean Our Year 5 and Year 6 children will be away on their residential trip from Wednesday to Friday next week at the Forest of Dean. Please make sure that you have sent in the signed medical form if you need your child to be given medication whilst away. We can only dispense prescription medicine (though we will also give out travel sick tablets if necessary). Please make sure that the medication is clearly labelled with the child’s name and dispensing instructions and that the teacher is given this on Wednesday morning. We do not know what the weather will be like – prepare for anything! Children do not have to bring sleeping bags or lunch.  Do not send mobile phones (there is no reception in the Forest anyway, and the children have the opportunity to live without electronic gadgets for these few days). Please do not send any valuables – it is hard for the children to have to take care of something valuable when they should be enjoying themselves. If you want them to have a camera, please make sure it is disposable. No food should accompany the children, except one very small packet of sweets for the bus if necessary. Children can bring a torch, a watch and a day sac with a water bottle.

Life Education Bus The Life Education Bus will be at our school on Monday and children will have the opportunity to explore various themes to do with staying healthy, resisting peer pressure, becoming independent and other similar topics. Parents are invited to go along for a little presentation on what the children will be doing, in the bus at 2.30pm on Monday 20th May. Do feel free to go along and find out a bit more about this programme.

New Parents’ Induction It was lovely to meet some of the parents of the children who will be starting at our school in September – some are already part of the Holy Trinity family and for others this will be their entry into the school community. We do encourage everyone to be friendly and supportive towards the new parents and make them feel welcome. It can be a daunting for those who have not been parents at a school before. Thank you to the PFA, particularly Mrs Hart, who came along to provide refreshments for this event.

Wake and Shake Once again, I would like to thank all the parents who take part in this each morning – it sets such a good example to the children to see the adults around them joining in. It is also very rewarding for the children who choreograph and prepare the routines each week to see adults waking and shaking with the children.

Sports Stars Our holiday club will run during the summer holidays through the week 29th July to 2nd August and again through the week of 12th August to 16th August. Sign up arrangements will be available shortly.

Lavington School Induction There is a Year 6 parents & students evening on Thursday 4th July from 7pm to 8.30pm and the Year 6 induction day is Friday 28th June. More information can be obtained from Lavington School.
