Newsletter 3 – 21st September 2012

Dear Parents

Don Anderson It is with great sadness that we offer our very sincere condolences to Laurie, Maise and Finlay on the death of Don. For some years Don served on our governing body and was vice chair for part of that time. His contribution to our school and community was greatly valued and his passing has left us all feeling the loss. He will be buried in Scotland, but Laurie has invited anyone who wishes to remember Don to a gathering which will be held on Sunday 30 September between 1pm and 4pm in the Bear Hotel, Market Place, Devizes. This gathering will be an opportunity for spontaneous contributions and sharing of memories from anyone who feels like it at the time. The Bear Hotel has asked for confirmation of attendees by Tuesday 25 September. If you are able to come, please let Don’s friend, Ian Prescott know via email: imprescott@ntlworld.com

PFA We are delighted that Lisa McKeigue and Jacquie Hart have agreed to take the Chair of the PFA, Sekena Williams is secretary and Kathy Jones is the treasurer. I have already had a few very good meetings with them and some wonderful projects are being planned. Their particular focus for the year is to welcome as many people as possible and to form a strong community of support for the school and for each other. I feel that our new committee is going to have a fantastic year and I am very grateful to the office bearers and the committee, as well as the huge band of volunteers who make the work of the PFA possible. The contribution they make to the enrichment of our children’s learning is huge and the school experience would be much poorer without their work.

School-led clubs Handbells start on Monday at lunchtime, Winter sports on Tuesday after school, chess and choir on Friday at lunchtime. Gardening club is already running and the clubs for the younger children will start later.

Other Clubs I am afraid that Dance club has been cancelled due to very low numbers of children signing up. All other clubs that run after school are now in full swing, with Street Surfing on Mondays, Drama on Tuesdays, Judo on Thursdays and Ukulele on Fridays. Their organisers will have given parents a timetable for the term.

Harvest Assembly takes place on Friday 5th October. Donations of non- perishable items can be brought in to school from next week. Our donations always go to the Devizes foodbank and here is a list of items that they particularly need: Milk (UHT or powdered), Sugar (500g,) Long life fruit juice, Tins of Soup, Pasta sauces, Sponge pudding (tin), Tinned Tomatoes, Breakfast cereals, Tinned Rice pudding, Tea Bags, Jar of instant coffee, Instant mash potato 500gms , Rice 500gms,  Pasta, Tinned meat/fish, Tinned fruit, Jar of Jam, Packets of biscuits, Snacks. Please ensure that all items are still in date.

School Council Our first meeting took place today. This gives us another forum in which to explore what the children themselves want from their school. Their contributions are always sensible and are important in informing our forward planning.

London trip As mentioned at some of the parent’s meetings, we were planning a trip to London to see a Dali exhibition, but sadly this exhibition has now closed. We are exploring other options.
