Newsletter 2 – 14th September 2012

Dear Parents

Parents’ Class Meetings Thank you to all who came to these meetings. If you have any queries, worries or comments, please do get in touch.

Topics The first term topics will be as follows:

Stonehenge: Healthy Me, Food and Farming

White  Horse: Magical Stories

Sarum: Vikings

Avebury: Vikings

Silbury: Romans, Vikings and other invaders

In the second half term, we will be working on themes around Christmas, with special reference to the painting of the Madonna of Port Lligat by Salvador Dali. The following term, we will be looking at a science theme – The Planets – and working on the music on that theme by Gustav Holst.

School-led clubs We will be running Hand Bells on Mondays at lunchtime, Gardening club on Monday after school, Winter Sports club on Tuesdays, and chess and choir on Fridays at lunchtime. Clubs for the younger children will include Sports, Multiskills and Art and will start later in the term.   Notices about clubs will be sent out shortly.

Drama The club ran a trial session last week and several children have signed up to attend. The first class is on Tuesday 18th September, and children are welcome to come along on the day provided they hand in the registration form to the office.

Sharing Assembly Please remember that sharing assembly takes place on Fridays at 2.15pm where children are able to share their successes and experiences with the whole school. All parents are welcome at this assembly.

Parking Unfortunately, we still have a small number of parents in our school who continue to park in the most irresponsible way, causing a lot of difficulties for our neighbours who have said they will phone the police immediately if they have a car parked across their driveway or blocking their entrance or exit to their properties. The police have undertaken to come out and deal with this issue. I do ask those parents involved to consider how they would feel if they were unable to access their property because of someone else’s inconsiderate behaviour. No one ought to be parking in Chitham Close (the road into the staff parking), particularly in the designated parking bays and on the corners of the junction, and those who park in Witchcombe Close need to ensure that their cars do not block driveways or the road.  We realise that the huge majority of our parents park with care and courtesy and would ask that others do the same.

Lavington Open Morning Our year 6 children are invited to attend an open morning at Lavington School on Friday 21st September from 9.30am-12 noon. This will give you an opportunity to visit the school during a normal working day and the Headmaster and staff will be on hand to answer questions that you may have.

Secondary School places Application forms have gone home with our year 6 children to apply for their secondary school place – please note that the deadline is Noon on 31st October 2012.

Primary School places We have application forms in school for children who will be four years old before September 2013. The deadline for these applications is Noon on 15th January 2013.

PFA

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – MONDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER IN SCHOOL AT 2.15 PM.

A reminder that our AGM is taking place next Monday afternoon before school pick up.The Chairman and the Treasurer give their reports for the last year and committee members will be voted in.This year we have 3 vacancies on the committee, Chair, Vice-chair and Treasurer. If you can find the time to hold one of these positions, then please consider putting yourself forward for one of these roles. If we do not fill these roles, the PFA will have to be wound up. This would mean that many events that the children enjoy every year will not be held and funds will not be raised for the school to use for all of our children.

If you do not want a position within the PFA but you would just like to help organise events as a committee member then please come to the meeting on Monday. We look forward to seeing you on Monday.

Best wishes

Mercedes Henning
