Newsletter 37 – 6th July 2012

Dear Parents

School Eucharist On Monday we celebrated our school Eucharist – a wonderful event, with dance, song, quiet time for reflection, noisy time (with tennis!) and laughter, and lots of water! My thanks to Rev James Campbell and Rev Jonathan Triffitt who supported us so strongly with this.

French Concert On Thursday our children treated us to a French concert – another wonderful and funny event. Lots of dancing, singing and acting, as well as monster building. My thanks to Mrs Twentyman who has worked hard to ensure that the children enjoy their French lessons, prepared for this concert and clearly learn a lot!  

Trophies If your child received a trophy last year, could we ask that you return it to the school so we can prepare for this year’s awards?

Dates for your diary:

Last Day of Term Friday 20th July, finishing at 3pm. 

TD Days for next year are as follows: Mon 3rd September, Mon 8th October, Mon 3rd June & Tues 4th June, Wednesday 24th July.

Sports Day is planned for Wednesday 11th July from 9am – Noon. Parents are invited to stay for a picnic with the children at lunchtime. If it is raining, the event will have to be cancelled and we will then hold it on the next fine day that we are all in school and free to take part.  

Leaver’s Trip Year 6 children have a surprise outing on Monday 16th July during the school day.

Leaver’s Assembly takes place on Thursday 19th July at 2pm.

Mini Inspection We pay for an expert (also an Ofsted inspector) to come into school regularly to assess our performance and quality assure the work we do here. She visited us on Tuesday and (after a very rigorous process) was happy to agree that once again, our outcomes would be judged outstanding. She interviewed children across all ages to get extra evidence and was particularly impressed with their undoubted enthusiasm for learning, their clear vision of their targets, their care and support of each other and their confidence when talking to her. She was also able to secure our judgement on the attainment and progress of all year groups.

Music Concert On Thursday 12th Julyat 5.00pm, we will be having our annual summer music concert. Do come along to enjoy this. We think it will last about an hour.  

New Clubs In response to parents requesting more clubs in the parental survey, we are going to try to offer at least two new clubs next term. Whether we can actually run these will depend on the take-up by children. One club will be a “Street Surfing” club (we will have a taster session of this in school on Monday 16th July) and the other will be a Drama Club where children will have expert drama tuition, performances and the opportunity to do exams through LAMDA. The publicity and sign up forms for the Drama Club accompany this newsletter. We need to have these in by 17th July at the latest.  The applications will be processed on a first come-first served basis. The club is open to all children in KS2 – that is Year 3 to Year 6.

Class Splits  At this time of the year, the teachers and I start to consider which classroom each child will be in for the next academic year. The children in Year 1, Year 4 and Year 5 will be split over two classrooms – the other year groups are not split. The decision is made using two criteria: firstly, how many children will be moving into the next classroom in order to keep our class sizes as uniform as possible, and secondly the child’s academic achievement as assessed through teacher assessment and other summative assessment tools. Some parents can become quite concerned about the classroom in which their child is placed, and I would like to reassure you all that your child will make good progress and will follow a creative and engaging curriculum suitable for their level of attainment, no matter which classroom they are in. In order to make the transition into the next year group as easy as possible for your child, it is important for you to be as positive and enthusiastic as possible about the transition. The information about which class the children are in will be released in the last week of the last term – we really do continue to assess children right up to the last minute so that we can be sure that each child is in the very best place for their learning and achievement. We ask you to trust us to do the very best for your child.

Year 6  Some of our Y6 parents would like to arrange a leaving party for the Y6 children. If you are interested, please come to school on Tuesday at 10.00am.

Sports Stars Holiday Club This will run in school in the week of 23rd July – 27th July and then again in the week of  13th August –  17th August. Children had the opportunity this week to take part in some of the activities that will be offered – it is always great fun. Sign up forms are available at the office.

Potterne Church Holiday Club – On your marks!  This is another fun event. To be held in the Potterne Vicarage garden from 23rd July – 27th July from 10.00 – 12.00. If you want any information please contact Dave and Ann Howard on 01380 723 189. There are registration forms for this club available at the school office.

Children’s Movie Night There are two films planned for the summer at Brounckers House, Erlestoke. The first is on Friday 20th July from 6-8pm and the second on Friday 17th August from 6-8pm, there will be swimming and a BBQ followed by a film.  Don’t forget your suits! Children under 5 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Donations of £1 for food are gratefully accepted.
