Newsletter 23 – 9th March 2012

Dear Parents

Clay Modelling Club  We have arranged for an artist in ceramics, Gary Wood,  to come along on Tuesdays through the summer term to lead a clay modelling club. He will provide the clay, his expertise and all necessary equipment, take the models back to his kiln to glaze and fire them and return them the following week. By the end of the 6 week course, the children will have several items that they will have made themselves. We have offered this club before and it was very popular and resulted in some really lovely pieces of work which the children were delighted with. The club will run after school on eachTuesday from 12th June to 17th July.  It will run from 3.00pm- 4.00pm. The cost for the 6 week course is £36 and is payable in advance. Cheques should be made payable to Gary Wood and must be accompanied by the permission slip at the bottom of this letter.  Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The club is offered to KS2 children. Please have your responses back at school by Friday 23rd March. You can view some of Gary’s work at www.garywoodceramics.co.uk or www.onetwofiveartschool.com.

Wake and Shake Once again, thank you to all the parents who do join in with Wake and Shake – it is so good for the children to see adults taking part and it helps to join our school community together. If parents do not join in, and just stand and watch, it is much more difficult to motivate the children.

Totem Pole Project All those families who sent in their application forms for this event have been given places – we look forward to seeing you all here on Wednesday 14th March after school in the school hall to make a family “totem pole”. There are a few spaces still left so do consider coming along to have fun with your child if you have not yet applied. There is no charge for this activity.

Refurbishment Our project to refurbish the school continues apace. We have now taken delivery of some lovely photos of the children that have been mounted on canvas and displayed in the entrance area. Our thanks go to the Great Cheverell Trust, led in part by Ian Christie, which provided the funds for these pictures. It was an expensive project and without their support we would not have been able to do this. It was fun to see how pleased the children were with the pictures. Do pop in and have a look at them.

Parent- teacher meetings  Thank you all for coming along to these meetings. We are always delighted that such a high percentage of our parents accept this invitation.  Please do remember that you are free to make an appointment to discuss your child’s progress or any other matter whenever you would like. Simply contact your child’s teacher to make this appointment.

Ridgeway Project We have been invited by Wiltshire College to be part of a project they are working on. It involves art work, soundscapes, expert views and our children’s work on the ancient “road” or network of paths that stretches from the Thames to our own county. This path is called the Ridgeway. It is possibly 5000 years old and has been in use continually. Our children will provide art work and also some short “sound bites” on what it might have been like on the Ridgeway in the Neolithic times. Examples of their work will be put online, on the County webpage for the Ridgeway project and, if good enough, some examples will be part of the “Location Aware” phone app which can be accessed by walkers along the Ridgeway.  On Tuesday, we had the manager of this project from Wiltshire college and also the curator of the art gallery at the library in Salisbury come into school to talk to the children about the Ridgeway, art and photography along the Ridgeway and the children’s own contributions.

Website We update the website very regularly, with new photos and our newsletter as well as policies and other important information about each class as so on.  Do have a look at the site.

Sports stars Our holiday club will run through the second week of the Easter half term break, from Tuesday 10th April to Friday 13th April. Forms to book your place for this have been sent home today.

Staff In Service Training (INSET) To ensure that our teachers are always at the forefront of new research, ideas and legislation, they occasionally go out to training/information/briefing sessions.  If this should happen, one of our High Level Teaching Assistants or a supply teacher will take their class for that day. Careful planning is left for the class, and good learning continues even though the teacher is not there.

Children’s Movie Night  is on Friday 23rd March from 6-8pm. “The Ten Commandments” will be shown in Erlestoke Church. All are welcome!

Lost property Please check your child’s jumpers and make sure that you have your own clothing. We have a case of a child whose jumper, with a name on, has gone missing and has not been returned. If you have the wrong jumper, do return it to school so that we can re-unite people with their own clothing. There is a lot of lost property which will be given to charity at Easter – if you think you may have something in the lost property box, please check it before the end of term.
