Newsletter 1 – 2nd Sept 2011

Dear Parents

Welcome back to all of you – it is wonderful to have the school filled once again with happy and excited children. A very warm welcome also to the new families who have joined us this academic year. We hope that you will quickly become part of our warm and welcoming school community.

Academy Following a very busy and complicated August, I am glad to announce that our school has converted to academy status from 1st September. This will give us the freedom to continue to develop our creative and engaging curriculum without being bound by detail of the national curriulum. We will still have Ofsted inspections and will have to write SATS so that we can be sure that standards continue to rise all the time. You and your children will not feel any dramatic changes as a result of this conversion.  Please do not feel under any pressure to buy the new uniform with a different logo – simply replace your old uniform according to your usual time scale and I expect that we will have both old and new logos around the school for many years yet.

Parents’ Class Meetings The teachers will be holding their annual familiarisation meetings in the week commencing 15th September – all parents are invited to attend the meeting for their child/ren’s class where the teacher will talk about classroom routines and expectations, homework, reward systems and various other matters and you will be given the opportunity to ask questions. We do encourage each family to send a representative to these meetings. Each meeting will be held in your child’s classroom. The dates and times for each class meetings are as follows:

Tuesday 13th September 2011             Sarum class                        5.00pm

Silbury class                       5.30pm

Wednesday 14th September 2011         Avebury class                    5.30pm

White Horse class            6.00pm

Stonehengeclass            6.30pm

School led clubs Permission letters for clubs will be sent out shortly. School led clubs will start in the week commencing Monday 26th September. These are free to join as our teachers and other people run them as volunteers, and the letters will make it clear which age group can be admitted and which afternoon the club will run. There are also some fee paying clubs which will send out notices in due course.

Swimming at Dauntsey’s School pool will start for Sarum class on Thursday 15th September. There is a letter attached for parents to give their permission.

Recorder lessons commence on Friday 9th September, please remember to bring your recorder to school!

Devizes Musical Theatre are currently looking for children aged 8-14  to audition for a production of the musical “Oliver!”, which will be  performed from 18th-21st April  2012 at Dauntsey’s School. Two sets of children will be needed, performing on alternate nights. Both girls and boys are welcome to audition for the children’s chorus, and DMT are also looking for two Olivers (boys only!), whose age in the show is supposed to be 11.

Interested children need to book a place on the initial workshop, which will be on the afternoon of Saturday 1st October (venue still to be announced). There will then be two pre-audition rehearsals in Devizes on the evenings of Thursday Oct 6th and Thursday Oct 13th.  Actual auditions will be on Thursday Oct 20th. Auditions for the chorus will be quite informal – possibly singing in small groups.  Auditions for the part of Oliver will be more formal. From November, rehearsal dates will switch to Monday evenings. We will need to set  a limit on the number of children auditioning, so if you’d like to  put your child’s name down for the first workshop, call Liz Sharman as soon as possible on 01380 831332.

Best wishes

Mercedes  Henning (Headteacher)
